This is some of my guest visiting me now...they say spring is coming!
visitors in my back yard
Send them to Iowa. We sure could use some signs of spring. 8 below tonight isn't very encouraging.
I recognize the ducks and the heron, what are the other ones?
Thought they looked like pea fowl or chickens, but looks like they have webbed feet, so some type of duck?
We had about 100 robins come into the trees last week, ground was covered with 5" of snow, so don't think they got too many nightcrawlers to eat.
This has been bugging me since I saw this picture,I know thier name, and can't get it,they are very agressive and the Mothers, the name begins with an M I think, where is CC she knows, but she is probably tending to her babies right now. I want to say meganser but I know thats not right.
Mallard? That's the little guy with green head.
Muskovy(sp?)
I wasclose on the spelling

I just love all your visitors! How great. I have never seen Muscovy before....... how colorful. I love your backyard too.......LOL
Beautiful Shot.
You have wild Muscovy's!
I use to have some of them, the fox got the last of them, they don't fly as well as other ducks.
I do like them though, great setters and they don't quack.
Also they are their own species ,if they cross with other ducks(mallards,etc...) the offspring are called mule ducks, and are infertile.......
as a old duck hunter I have heard that they are good eating. if one ever wonders in my back yard I'll find out....
How wonderful to have such colourful birds in your own back yard. and to be on water..that is the best! I had never seen a Muscovy before either..so I have learned something today.
Root, you are right! They are Muscovy's. They say they are aggressive but they're not. They might chase each other sometimes but I have one eat out of my hand. They don't quack, it is more of a hissss sound. They are funny ducks! They bob their head up and down when they talk. So if I ask them a question they always say yes! They are very well feed here...crack corn. My DH is always saying they look like good food!
Sorry for the missinfo,it's my typing vredfish, what I ment to say was they are great sitters and very agressive mothers, sometimes the brain and fingers don't work well together here,LOL,CC,I thought of you soon as I saw them, noticed you had some in a thread you shared once,Sure hope yours are Ok today.
My neighbour got some of these ducks for the express purpose of controlling the slug population, they eat all the slugs in sight and find the hidden ones. She had 2 or 3 of them, and they werent noisy so perfect for city living.
Great shot Vredfish, and it is indeed a good sign that spring is on its way.
Lovely photo Vredfish!
Becarefull with the heron incase you or your neighbours have fish ponds! That reminds me, has anyone got frog spawn yet? We got some two nights ago and since then the amount of clumps have been increasing! Nature's great!
The Muscovy ducks are great..They are nicknamed the Turkey duck because they are such great flyers, and also most of them roost up very high, unlike most ducks..I have several and a few mallards..The offspring of the 2 are interesting looking, and yes they are sterile.
