Is Aristolochia Elegans the same as dutchman's pipe?
Just wondering, because when I typed it into the database that picture comes up but yet it isn't spelled the same.
Thanks for the help
Is this the same as....
yes. there are a couple of Aristolochias (sp?) but it's dutchmans pipe.
O goodie!!! I was hoping that is what I had! Now to grow them from seed....that may not be to easy huh?
Thanks
I planted one of those last year. The nursery said it was a pipevine but didn't know what kind. I was looking for pipevine for the Pipevine Swallowtail
Well it turned out to be a A. elegance. It has cool looking flowers but it's no good for the Pipevine Swallowtail (if the butterfly bothers to lay eggs on it, it kills the little cats. It's only good for Polydamas and they don't come to my neck of the woods)
I have also been told it's not hardy here. I guess I will find out soon enough.
I have planted seeds from A. durior and another Aristolochia that I got from the Market Bulletin, again they didn't know what kind. Both of these I had between moist paper towels in the fridge for two months. Then I planted them on 2/2 and no signs of life yet.
I also planted seeds of A. ringens on 2/2 without cold treatment, no signs of life there either.
Since your seed are from A. elegans and it's not hardy here I would think that it doesn't need statification.
So, no it's not easy. At least not for me.
I think I saw Evert or Mitjo posting a photo of Aristolochia seedlings somewhere. Maybe they would know.
Thanks for all your help and info Paintedlady, I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya and hope you get some growth from the seeds you planted. I just planted mine in a pot with Miracle-Gro potting soil, so maybe that will help.
Maybe Evert will see this thread and help me out a bit too. If not I will e/mail him and see if he knows any info.
Thanks again!!
Molly,
the seeds can take up to 9 months to germinate, so don't throw them out. Just keep them watered and they might surprise you by sprouting earlier. Also the Fimbrita makes tubers instead of just roots and it dies back during the winter then resprouts during spring. The blooms on it are about 1 1/2 inches across and the upper lip is covered with tiny hairs that look like eyelashes. It is sometimes called the eyelash dutchman's pipe and you have to look for the bloom because they blend in with the leaves. don't give up hope.
Thanks for the help Jackie! Guess it will be one of those pots that I have to quit looking at everyday, because it is driving me nuts waiting on them to sprout out!
Wonder if I plant them in the ground come spring time if that would help?
What about soaking and nicking them??
I'm sure it will be well worth it once they do something huh?
Sorry but I don't know about Aristolochias, however, Mitjo started some from seeds this Spring, ask him have they sprouted yet..
Will do Thanks Evert!
Actually, years ago ,I got some seeds from some one, and they said to dip them in boiling water to make them germinated faster, never tried it cause it just didn't sound quite right...but they never germinated
Hmmm now you have me wondering CC! Wonder if I should at least try it with maybe 2 of them just to see what happens. Not that I have that many to play around with, but it might just work.
