brug suckers

Dripping Springs, TX

I'm ready to cut off a sucker from one of my brugs--but can I try and root it? Any point to trying? Glory and Kell probably have comic things to say about this....lol

Don't know what they will say, but I do it all the time!

Do you just cut them off or root them too?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Well I tried to think of something fun to say but it is too early in the morning!! How tall have you let it grow? I have been using mine to make alley trees. They grow so tall so fast! I cut them off when they get 6 feet or Y. Cut off most of the leaves. They will root in a bucket of water or in a bucket of dirt. I find if the top is very green, the top will wilt however it will come back up as soon as it is rooted. Or put a clear plastic bag on top after you have sprayed water in it then drained it. Close the bag. That can give it enough moisture to help it not wilt. Or spritz it frequently. I have had the brug actually bend over at the middle for weeks, then come back up when I thought I would have to cut it off for the top looked so sad! Now I stake it immediatley and use velco all the way up to hold it to the stake upright. Keeps the trunk straighter. If the brug is one that I want to take no chances in losing (not that I have lost one the other way yet but they can look sad for awhile), I just slap some wet moss on it and silver foil around it and let it root before I cut it off.

DR,
I have cut the suckers off above the root and at the root...both ways they root real well.....that's as far as I'm going with that subject. LOL

Ah the "girls" are holdin' back on the jokes today--what a pity. If I cut the suck off will it cause the tiny buds to fall off? It is only a little over 3 feet tall. There is a "y". I've had this one over 3 years and this is the first time I've had buds.

Well, if it has buds, I definitely would NOT cut the sucker off now. I put the suckers in water to root, keep warm.

If the sucker doesn't have any buds, it can be cut off with no danger to the rest of the plant. Cutting it off won't cause the buds to drop off the rest of the plant. In fact, your plant won't even blink.

DR, i push the soil back and either cut/pull it out, you can usually get roots on the sucker already. my creamsickle suckered like crazy and i think at least a dozen people here got creamsickle from me last summer.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I got one from Arlene and can't wait to see it bloom. I hope mine suckers a lot too. I'm sure you will have great luck rooting the suckers if they need to be rooted. I can't wait to have the suckers to worry about. :-)
