When do birds build their nest?

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

I have several birdhouses that I want to put out, but I am not sure exactly when the birds start building their nest. I'm thinking it's spring but not positive.
Do you know when??
Also does anyone know the hole sizes of houses? and which ones need a perch on the front of them??
TIA

MB Birds are building their nests now here in Tampa Bay. Just yesterday I was watching some little sparrows in the rafters of a strip mall. They were so cute and so very busy!

I think I'll put out a few just to see what happens.
Thanks!

Hi Mollybee, The size of the hole depends on the type of birds you wish to live in your new house, also the size and shape of the house makes a difference on who will take you up on your offer to live in your houses. If you go to this site:http://birding.about.com/library/blhousespecs.htm
this will give you all the specs for the house sizes right down to the size and shape of the entrance hole. good luck, they are so much fun to watch, little hint, when you brush your hair or your animals take it and put it in a branch where you can watch them take it strand by strand to help build their nests, they love it.Respectfully, Little Hawk.

Thanks Littlehawk!! I love birds and I love watching them build their little nest too. Isn't is neat to find a old nest and see how neatly the twigs and strings and etc are all placed in there!
Thanks for the link!

Littlehawk, Thanks so much for that site. It is full of information. I've just gotten into birding in the last year. Birding is just a natural extention of gardening. Any ideas about how to keep the neighbor's cat away?

I'm afraid that I can't help you much on that problem, only keep your feeders and nest boxes high and the nesting holes the size that is called for.I have used chicken wire stapled to the front of the nest box in such a way as to form a half bubble, that way the bird can come and go but the cats cannot get at the nesthole to harm the babies,it doesn't make for a very beautiful house but it does serve the purpose.Maybe this could be of some help to you I hope, keep me in touch to see how you do if you don't mind?Good luck and put out as many as you can make there is safety in numbers.
