These are from Studley's seeds. I have quite a few others coming up from different people. Farmgirl's seeds came up like gangbusters. I think every one germinated. I chipped the seeds with toe-nail clippers and soaked for a few days until I started to see sprouts. Don't know what I'm gonna do with all these cannas!
Baby Cannas
they grow fast too! grandbaby and I planted some and she checks them everyday! it's a really good seed for tiny children to plant, big enough to stick in the hole and fast growers.
Yes ... I have some that need transplanting already. And of course that means I need to set up more lights - lol!! It's a vicious circle....
I'm already digging out Cannas that are popping up every where..Multiplied so much from last year and also many new ones from fallen seeds..My Iris & dalilies also are so thick I'll have to do some thinning...I've already got the roundup on some of the Alstromeria, so pretty, but wow watch out, they are all over..LOL
Larkie
I planted my canna seeds without nicking them....do you think they will still sprout? :-o!!
Edited to add: I planted them under lights with bottom heat

Sue_WA,
they will still come up, but will take longer to sprout.
Poppysue,
your canna babies look great. "LIGHTS, ACTION, GROWING, take six..."
I was so jealous I just ran in and filed holes in about 4 dozen of my own! LOL Y'all gotta stop this teasing. While I was at it, I started about the same amount of other seeds. I am so sick of looking at snow!
LOL Badseed! I am anxiously awaiting spring too. We have had quite a bit of rain (of course) and it's squish squish city out there. I check my seedlings under the lights at least twice a day....(sigh!)
I started to clean the shed....and ugh...I found some things I forgot to plant. Like, allium and iris reticulata...I'm going to put them in and hope for the best. Some of them were goners, some might make it. But I'm hijacking the thread! I'm sorry...get on a roll sometimes! :-D
Sue how long ago did you plant your seeds? They're big enough to fish them out of the soil, chip em, and give em a soaking. I think I would.
Poppysue, just a few days ago on the 14th. I'll pull em out and nick em/soak em. Wish me luck
Poppysue how long does it take for Cannas to bloom from seed?
I don't have any Cannas yet, but have been thinking of making them my next project after seeing some amazing ones in catalogs.
Paintedlady,
If you start the seeds now they will bloom in their first year. It takes getting used to nicking and soaking the seed coats but once you get the hang of it, its smooth sailing after that.
Its a wonderful way of getting plants and the folliage is so lush to look at in the garden. You do have to lift the tubers from the soil in colder regions.
Sue_WA,
The seeds that didn't sprout for me within a week I picked them out and nicked and soaked them again so its worth the effort. They grow incredibly fast!! Some of my seedlings have grown an inch a day!
hope that one will germinate....
I`d like to see those in here too.....very nice.!
My Cannas always sprout very quickly, and I never have bothered to knick, soak or any of all that stuff. Each to his own, lol...
Larkie,
You are lucky to be in zone 8, here the soil outdoors doesn't even get remotely warm until late June...by that time we wouldn't even get a bloom until next year after overwintering them indoors.
JOYDIE!
There is no info by your name. where do you live? What is your zone?
Thanks
TLC
My seed has been in for 5 days now. Already signs of germination. Using a triangular file to scarify the seed was too difficult. I just pinched the coat with lineman's pliers. The seed is from Karchesky Canna. I started them early in hopes of bloom the first year. Just hope they don't get too tall before it's time to put them out.
TLC,
I went back and updated my info. It was there before and I never noticed it was no longer available. I'm a 10 minute walk to the south western tip of the Bay which is part of Lake Ontario. We have milder winters than places like Buffalo and Chicago which are notorious for cold winters. Toronto, Ontario is about an hour away from me and there weather is colder than we have here. Hamilton is part of the northern Carolingian (spelling?) trail that crosses into Canada so we can grow many of the same plants, but with winter protection. Hardy tropicals do well here in sheltered planting areas.
Oh, jodie1!
I am so jealous . . thought Canada was all colder than me and here you are in 6B! I am a 4B trying to be just a 5!
Thanks sharing about your area.
TLC
PS. Also for putting that info by your name; helps me a lot when reading posts.
Is that kind of like being a size 16/18 and trying to be a 12?? LOL
Badseed...lol...yeah something like that. This year we've had an inordinate amount of snow, but it doesn't stay on the ground very long..we might get 4 inches and then it melts, more snow, repeating cycle.
Don't feel too bad. We got another couple of inches last night and I am sitting here waiting for the street to be clean!
Badseed: Love your fancy pot for canna seeds, don't you cover them?
We got half inch of rain, then 8" of snow last night.
Spring is just aroun the corner, ha!
Hey, why waste Cool Whip and Ice cream bowls?! LOL If it holds dirt, it IS a pot. snicker I am going to cover them. I was waiting to see how many would send out a root since some of them were old seeds. After I soaked them, only about ten of four dozen had a nubby so I just kept a lid on the bowl.
Badseed; you have the same type containers that I have and use. Yogurt cups work great as well; empty of course.
I'm with you guys, if it looks like a pot and holds dirt then it is one! El cheapo here.
LOL Great minds.... Just want to add that I covered the seeds and got them under lights today. :)
milk jugs are my newest find! LOL! love em. DH saves two cool whip bowls for cereal, I get all the rest, but how much cool whip do you really use? (not enough)
That is why you have to save the plastic bowls from butter and ice cream too! LOL
LOL Now I am smacking myself for buying the tins!! I just remembered the peanut butter buckets though! Excellent for the big canna. I have five kids, so you KNOW I buy peanut butter and plenty of it. LOL By the way, I love your backdrops Doc. Noticed some nice striped canna in another picture. :)
Don't ya love it..Seed pots are a never ending adventure..LOL..I also use all the things that have been mentioned..I agree, if it will hold dirt, it's a pot..
