The Lighter Side

Here's an article I wrote about Furball for the newsletter of a feline rescue group I'm volunteering with ... enjoy!!

“Oh Boy! A new toy! Can I see it now?! Please?!”, I could almost hear her say. Then, before it was out of the cardboard holder, she was jumping 4’ high just to take a peek. As I struggled with the twist-ties holding down the new toy, I spoke to Furball in excited tones. Finally, the plastic rod, elastic string, and cellophane streamers (complete with a cheery bell) were a unit separate from it’s packaging.

As five-month-old Furball became completely aware of this new entertainment, her eyes widened. A bell, bouncy string, fancy colors … there was no telling what would happen next. She leaped into the air, grabbed hold of the streamers, and the magic began. After running four laps around my apartment, Furball soon learned that grabbing hold of the elastic string, even for a moment, meant when she let go, it would catapult far into the air, in all unexpected directions.

Finally resorting to her worn out state of an exercised kitten, Furball joined me for a night of slumber. We were both tired from chasing the new toy, and anxious for the new day ahead. When I awoke, I heard the jingling of the same bell, but it was not from the living room as I had figured. Instead, the bell, streamers, elastic string and rod, were directly beside my pillow, jingling under my nose. Furball had her night of rest, and was more than anxious to begin her day right – chasing her favorite toy. Since the purchase of this inexpensive “fishing-pole” toy, I have enjoyed waking up nearly every morning to the jingling, cheery bell long before the alarm ever goes off, and an energetic kitten begging for a morning moment of playtime.
