Dividing potted EE's

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

I have the plain old colocasia esculenta in a 20 inch pot. I think maybe they need to be divided, lookin' like alot of bulbs in there. How do I go about it and when should I do it? Just dump the whole smear out on the g'house floor and start breaking them apart? I don't want to shock the poor things and kill them!!! There is room around the outside of the pot yet, it's not full or pushing out the sides of the pot. Maybe I should just leave them alone this year yet. What do you think?

We split ours here year round. It doesn't hurt them at all except for maybe the first couple weeks then they releaf and look just like they did before :) I do cut off all but the new leaves when repotting it seems to help them get their strength back quicker :)
