My recently potted up Brug cuttings are doing well, too well. I am growing them under lights, and they are getting tall enough to start touching the fixture. It is impossible to raise the lights, as they are all under cabinets, breakfronts, etc. My question is whether it is okay to cut them back, or will that delay flowering in some way? I imagine I could do this, and root even more cuttings... Thanks, John
Cutting Back?
John,my first ? is how many hours are you running your lights?Second why not root more cuttings?third are they showing any growth at the leaf nods? Now someone more educated then I will be here soon!did you see TLCs Dat with buds? You asked in another thread,Forth ? What ya doing up so late,LOL.
Bob
John, I ran into the same trouble last year when my cuttings quickly outgrew my sunporch.LOL
Have they started to form a Y at the top yet. In order to flower they have to form a Y. If you cut that top growth off it will delay flowering as it will have to grow another Y. Maybe Monika or one of the other experts can come up with a solution.
Bob, lights are on about 16 hours a day. More cuttings? How many Brugs do I need? ;-) Yes, there are signs of leaf buds at the nodes, so a pruning should encourage them to grow. I am amazed that TLC's Datura is blooming while so the plant is so small. Somtimes I am up rather late...
Snowhermit, no, there are no 'y's forming yet.
Thank you Bob and Snow for your help! John
John, do you have windows you could move them to? Hate to see you cut them back when spring is just around the corner. I have some in east and west windows and they are doing wonderfully. just a thought
The outside light coming in, is getting better every day, brugs are starting to grow and get new leaves, hang in there, I'd try not to cut any back, if you can get them through the next couple of weeks., you'll have it made.
I have some buds.
Okay, tiG and Hibiscus, you talked me into it! If only I had more windows! My living room is practically all glass, but faces North on one wall, and there is a porch blocking the sunny side. Porch is unheated, but all glassed in. Maybe I can sneak them out there a few weeks earlier than in the garden... Thanks, John
Try them even in the north window.....I have some on the floor in a kind of bright room but no real direct light and they are doing fine. You just need them to survive till spring actually......... and I bet they do just fine. I would not cut them back so close to being outside. Goodluck whatever you decide.
I have to start spreading mine out someplace. Thought about the enclosed breezeway, but one night of below freezing temps, I'd slip up and forget to bring them in, so all winter growing would be for nothing. Mine are just as close to outside light, as I can get them. They do not need direct light.
So, really, it is a matter of survival... Thank you all for your feedback. I will give them as much light as possible, and avoid 'cutting back'. John
