Does anyone grow clematis?

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I have clematis 'Freckles' blooming right now, I have another tiny bloomed yellow, rhederiana, that I love, also a winter blooming one. I really like the tiny, thumbnail sized blooms. I also have a couple of shrub clematis that I was given a few years ago. They are very different from the upward growers.
Anyone with pictures please show them to me. Clematis is one of the first plants that hits the nurseries out here, any day now. Which are your favorites? Has anyone grown 'Blue Light'yet?

Hi Liz,
I don't have any of the ones you mention. I do have a few though. Nelly Moser is very nice..big blooms.
I have Josephine, Proteus and President. Also the reliable favorite Jackmaii. I planted a couple of new ones last year that haven't done anything yet.. can't think of the names..haven't bloomed yet. One that was a disapiontment for me was Viticella (sp?) Polish Spirit..small purple blooms..and not very many..but it may get better as time passes.

Proteus..this one claims to have some double and some single blooms..I have only had singles so far..but it was only planted last year.

If you like tiny blooms this is called Purpleleaf..it has star like white blooms..those are impatiens on either side..but if you look right in the middle of the plant you can see what I mean..02 was the first year for that one too..I don't think it grows tall like the others.

Give me a day or two to go thruogh my pics Liz.
I have about 15 Clemmies, some are so old that I got them prior to realizing at some point in time I would like to remember their names and the tags have been lost. :(

Starzz.......I love the little twig trellis against the tree! Twigs and branches, the natural way to go! Elaine.....I'm heading for my clematis phot album as we speak!

Drop in anytime rootdoctor :)
Here are a few in my collection.
Many are old pics, taken before I ever had a computer to share photos on so they are not the best capture.

Alpina Willy
An alpine that is open and airy and flowers early.

Dr Ruppel is a shorter one here for me.

Duchess of Edinburgh is a full double white and is a vigerous bloomer. I have had this one over 13 years.

Ernest Markham really likes to climb. This one reaches over 15 feet most summers for me. The foliage is not heavy so it would go with other plantings, say roses, well.

Niobe is another old one I have. It does quite well even in partial shade.

Proteus is 13 years old as well. The flowers on this one are the largest of all my Clemmies.

Clematis macropetala is another earlt Alpine with a very open type foliage and small nodding flowers.

Oh my goodness Starzz and Ruth Ann, you've both got me beat by a mile. WOW!! I sure wish I had started with them earlier. I have a few but nothing like the size of you two.

the other side of the fence is always greener so they say Liz.
I wish I had your Brug collection! :))

I can't tell Elaine, the colour is off on my computer, but the colour I do see is gorgeous. Tomorrow is new computer day YAY!
OK - everyone, lets make a pact. We all load up our picture files this spring and summer - this is great and we're going to do it again next winter right??? This has certainly helped me over the winter hump.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

sounds like a great plan!!!!!!!!

dobie, ON(Zone 3a)

I have only the one clematis that I bought last year and it never bloomed, maybe this year. I'm not sure we will see spring and summer this year, it seems a long time coming. We have had a cold spell for the last three weeks, this morning it is almost -40. I say Baaa Humbug to winter.

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Well Lots of new posts here..great thread idea Liz.
Rootdoctor..thanks ..glad you enjoyed our photos.
Ruth Ann..Have you ever had doubles on your Proteus clematis? I really like your Duchess of Edinburgh...makes me want to have one..I will keep an eye out for one at my local Garden centre.
Elaine..I think yours looks like the Proteus that Ruth Ann and I have. I hope my two come along as nicely as yours and Ruth Ann's I have Proteus and President (two of each)planted on either side of my Apple wood arbour. The lilac and purple should make a good show when they mature.
Cheers,
Carol

To be honest, I had to go to a Clematis site and look at the pics to find the name for the Proteus so I could be wrong on that name but it rang a bell in the back of my mind.
The eye behind the cream coloured anthers is white and although it doesn't show at all on the front of the petals, on the back there is definite white veining on them.
The new flower starts out as almost a blue, then fades to the mauve.
I have never had doubles on it.
It is also the first to flower early in the spring after the Alpines are done.

Duncan, BC(Zone 8a)

I have a pink as well as this. It is an Alpine.

Mind not into gardening this time of year so don't remember names and too lazy to go and look at the tag but this was new last year. Not sure if it survived or not.

My favourite--Cardinal Rouge huge flowers and blooms forever.

Lovely, lovely pictures poppytree - have you noticed they're already budding out? Such a nice winter, (sorry, back east).

My clematis have been budding out for a while now. Spring is here. YEH!!!!!!!

Great pictures everyone.

And the Armandii is just going to pop! Can you believe it,..in the middle of February! Elaine

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Poppytree..thanks...you jogged my memory..I bought a little scraggly Clematis at the end of the season last year..and couldn't remember the name..(the tag is on it under the snow!%#) When I saw your photo of the Cardinal Rouge..I said.."that's it!..so after seeing your pic...I can only dream that it blooms this year. I planted it at the base of an apple tree and hope to train it to grow up and around it..I think I may have to put some sort of holder for it though.
I like your Alpina..I don't have one of those.

Burlington, ON(Zone 6a)

I just took this pic.
It takes some imagination to visualize my Pink Flamingo Clematis that grows through the Larch tree pictured to the right in this pic.
We have 6" of fresh snow here today and my Clemmies are no where near starting to bud!

Thumbnail by RA49
Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

It sure looks pretty..but I think we have had quite enough snow and cold! All I want to do on weekends is hibernate inside..but at least we can look at our photos and dream and plan.
Apart from the Niobe you mentioned, do you know any other Clematis that does well in shade?
Cheers,
Carol

LOL - and we make a point of not sending pictures that look like that this time of year. Cherry tree season out here is incredible - Vancouver city alone has over 40,000 of them on the boulevards. But then we don't get the fantastic fall colours that you get. So all of us have something to be grateful for.
