Started the furnace last night. Seems to be working good. Brought out geraniums today and started transplanting. Here is Bernie Jr. hard at it.

I can see that your's is the brain i'm wanting to pick. Do you start geraniums from seed, or can you take cuttings. Also I've had a hard time finding ivy geraniums. Are they rare?
Your geraniums look wonderful! Did you recieve any formal training in greenhouse growing?(Is there anywhere that teaches greenhouse?)
Thanks for the pics
Eileen
Hey Sky,love that question.I would also like to know any place better than Dave's that offers a crash course in greenhousin!! Hey Shoe,(no I did not sneeze),did you take any classes in gardening or did you find it on your own? Mabe in a lost Christmas tree or under a large mushroom or somethin? Let us know how you got all your learning up there in NC!
Looking real good! Try and keep them around 60º to 65º at night. Keep below 80º in day time. They will grow fast.
Ours were planted just before Christmas to bloom in late April. You should have flowers by Mothers Day? Maybe.

P.S.
How far from us is Selma? We might have work for a experienced greenhouse person! Just checking.

huh hum! Mark clears his throat.
Do you think you could start calling these by their correct name especially to those your are gonna sell to? These plants are actually Pelargoniums and not Geraniums
We are not living in U K.
it's not just a UK thing it's a world wide thing
Pelargoniums were first put forward as being different way back in 1738 by J Burman. Linnaeus, the daddy of plant nomeculture, decided, in 1753, they weren't distinct enough and he called them Geraniums along with the Erodiums. around this time Pelargoniums started to arrive from Southern African and quickly caught on and because Linnaeus had such a good reputation the name stuck.
In 1789 a botanist called L'Heritier said the 3 plants should be different but it was too late as the masses had the name Geranium firmly in their minds.
so 300 years on we can fly to the moon, send emails at 3000 km/sec ........ but gardeners can't call a Pelargonium a Pelargoniums their correct name.
We sell 3000 Geraniums per year.
If we advertized or called them Pelargoniums, we wouldn't have to plant the seed !!!!!!!!!
You have to admit, Mark, that given the realities and constraints of commerce, he does have a point ;~)
I promise to call them Pelargoniums when I get them home from the greenhouse, though. Feel proud that you've educated at least one dunderhead (me).
Adam.
PS: Nice new logo..., sorry I didn't comment on it before.
Dunderhead.....mmmmmmm.... another new word.
OK point taken
Looking good, what variety are they?
ßernie
They are a mix I got from Earl May. When should I pinch them back?
Linda
NEVER!!!!
Thank you. They are so perfect I was hating to even think about having to do it. Linda
Linda you should try and grow them to 3 feet plus like they now do in Europe. I think the tallest I've seen in a magazine is 12 feet.
Do you have pictures of any that are 12 ft. I do think I will try to make a standard out of one or two. I am just growning them for containers to give away. My greenhouse is only 8X12. Way to small. I feel very fortunate to have one that size. Linda
Are any of these the vine type.. i have a friend whos wanting the vine to put in baskets..
I would love to learn more also-- Have small greenhouse and its getting full of everything I can find. But having so much fun... thanks bon
Bon, your friend is probably looking for ivy geraniums. I've found seeds for them in some seed cataloges,(Pinetree Garden Seeds, and Stokes.)The seeds are a little pricey, but so are the plants.
Thanks.. I must have missed them in the pinetree seeds I just recieved an order and darn it.. I really wanted to do that for him.. I guess I'll have to order again!! Yours look so good.. I'm sure thats what he was talking about..
Glad this came back to the top.
Weedlady, first time seeing this, so hope me not answering your question above didn't make you feel slighted. And by the way, "bless you!" ;>)
As for your question: I actually have no education! Never took gardening classes...just had/have an avid interest in Nature/Growth/Natural Order of Things (or whatever we call it)...and have been involved in growing since, since, well,....since the day I was born! :>)
Bernie, looking good there! When I grow up I hope to come take a tour of your place some day!
And by the way, Mark...Wasn't there a thread somewhere that mentioned the difference between geraniums and pelargoniums?
Shoe, bring your truck and we'll load that sucker up for the return trip!
ßernie
Shoe, Just read that other thread and now I'm completely totally confused.
HAH!...snow, I'm still looking for that thread! You're one up on me!
Bernie, don't say that unless you mean it! I may not take home anything, but I may show up there one day for sure!
Shoe, Try here. http://davesgarden.com/search/index.php?search_text=Pelargoniums
Okay, found it. Thanks.
