Poor Me

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

I don't know how but my brug. cuttings got bugs. I treated them for about 3 weeks. I got up 4 days ago and looked at them and they were covered with bugs again. Well, I opened the back door and threw them out into 2 degree temps. Sad Sad

That is a shame Honibee. Were they spider mites or aphids or something different. Too bad you didn't post here before throwing them out. I'm sure the experts could have told you how to get rid of them for good and you might have been able to save them.
Spider mites this time of year when they are in the house is a common problem.

You didn't!.......

What kind of bugs? I am still finding some one now and again, since October, have brugs in 5 rooms. I am afraid to move any into another room, as that room is free of bugs and never know for sure if I might take a plant in with bugs. I seem to be fighting spidermites? In the soil. Almost got them licked, I hope!

Have used alcohol/wtr., Murphys' soap/wtr., Raid, spray up to ceiling and let spray fall over the plants. About the time I get them all killed, it will be time to go outide and get some new bugs, never ending!

I had to spray this morning because of a few aphids. This is new to me. Never had aphids on any of my brugs in the years that I've grown them. They are pretty easy to control, even if I can't get totally rid of them. I thought they were all gone after a spray several weeks ago, but they're back!!

Honibee, remind us when it warms up for you, we'll come up with some babies for you.

HoniBee, I know what you mean. Mine seem okay so far, but after last summer's red spider mite fiasco I am keeping a close eye on them all. I keep swearing 'no more tropicals' which need to be overwintered indoors, but somehow the plants have taken over again. I am sure arlene and other brug friends here will help out in the spring- me too, if mine don't join yours out in the arctic wastelands! John

Thanks for the post. I tried all the things that I could use. With the breathing problems I have I am unable to spray things that I could breath in. I have some on the last two I have and am going to try something else. I thought about taking a garbage bad and spraying inside it and than placing it over the plant.

HoniBee, why don't you strip the leaves off the plant? This is what I've done a few years back when I had a case of spider mites I couldn't kick. It didn't harm my brugmansia plants. Heck, beats tossing them. Good luck.

Honibee, if they are small emough, why not submerge them in the kitchen sink with warm water? this is a method for a certain kind of mites and i have a theory that it may drown other critters as well. or simply put them in the sink and bathe them well once a week to rinse the critters off. should control them.

Or the bathtub if they are larger

My bugs seemed to be in the soil. Have been dusting and digging it into the soil with powdered Sevin, seems to have killed them, but not before most of my Passion Flowers showed problems. Did the same with that dirt, but P. Flwrs. never did come back to life!
