The neighbors heard Taps

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

yep, early this morning, from my steps, the mournful sound of Taps could be heard as I looked over the damage of 2 nights (not one,but 2!) 20* temps. My poor gingers and nana's, it was more than they could take. I did cover 2 of my prize plants, but I doubt it did any good. I was afraid to look at them.

Sorry Lisa- I'm sure they'll come back from the roots! I suppose it won't make you feel better right now, huh?

((hugs))

sniff sniff, thanks Kristi, I am sure they will come back-I just will not know till the spring. I have a new respect for you folks who have to brave the cold for months on end. I don't know how yall do it!

I can hardly stand the cold anymore. I'm serious! It has REALLY gotten to me this season. I'm SO working on moving to a warmer climate. One of my greatest joys (outside my family) is to garden. It just doesn't make sense for me to live in a cold climate. I think about all I miss during these cold rotten months. HOPEFULLY within a few years will be somewhere warmer.
Hang in there Lisa- winter is almost over for you.

I so sorry to hear about your Gingers & 'Nana's! It's so hard to believe that it would ever get that cold in "your neck of the woods"!!! Who would have ever thought of Southern Louisiana...Hope the covered plants faired better!

Lisa, I'm truely sorry for you. Unaccustomed as you are to the cold weather you have been having it would not have occurred to you to mulch really thickly last fall and put up wind/cold barriers for your plants. I doubt the ground really got cold enought to damage the roots, but just in case, I think a good deep layer of newpapers, etc. as soon as possible would be a good idea. If the ground is already dangerously cold, some lukewarm water poured right around the roots, then covered with lots of heat retaining mulch might help.
GOD bless.
