San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Eyes, they sell them here in nurseries......... people grow them in their yards. They are have too much stem for me as far as looks go but if yuo like that light and airy look. This one is a newer hybrid that I started seeing a couple of years ago. It is darker then the one they were selling before that. I do believe they are frost tender for I never see real big ones.

Hardy in zones 10 & 11. The Latin name is Alyogyne huegelii. I added some missing info to the PDB. There's a couple nice pictures in the entry http://plantsdatabase.com/go/31420/

Thanks bunches, y'all. So, Kell you're saying in zone 7, it would be aa annual? Poppysue, can they be overwintered?

Not easily, Eyes. One of our local nurseries has a wonderful policy on tender plants, 'get it the h*ll out of here before it gets cold'. They mark things down to practically nothing to get rid of them in the fall! Mom bought 2 standards a few years ago, one for her & one for me. They were big, established plants for $5 each, and neither one made it through the winter inside. If one of us had lost it, I would think that it was because we didn't take care of it right, since both died, I think they're a tough plant to overwinter.

If you want something with a similar look on a smaller scale, I have blue potato bush. It roots easily and blooms constantly. The flowers are about an inch across. Outside, they are a deep purple, right now, inside the house, they are a dark lavender.

I found them, called "Mood Indigo" Alyogne, $6.50 per plant, S/H $9.00. If they aren't hardy or half hardy, I can't justify that. Blue Potato Bush??? Sounds interesting, do you have a pic, Ronna?

Here's the Blue Potato Bush http://plantsdatabase.com/go/31441/ I grew it last summer for the first time. Mine got huge in a large container. I stuck mine in the dark basement with the brugs ... and it looks dead now. I don't know if it's just sleeping, or if it really is dead.

Hey Eyes... I came across this on the web http://www.seedman.com/Tips/bluehib.htm Thought you might want to give seeds a try. I'm sure it's a lot cheaper than the plants are.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I got one of these last year and to begin with, it didn't bloom much. The foliage was sticky feeling and not a lot of it. It was a very disappointing plant, but I brought it inside with the rest of the hibiscus and hopefully, they are just sleeping in the basement right now. They sure don't have green leaves anyway.

Maybe I will just track your Second year growth, Brugie, before I committ to these. Thanks for the info!!
