How cute is this?

Ellabell, GA(Zone 8a)

This is Donna's Monster brug. It y-ed at 1/2 an inch, and already have 3 buds. I just put a card under the buds to guide them over the edge of the cup. Can this little plant handle flowering already, or am I supposed to take the buds off?
(I don't really want to take them off)

I would take off the buds.Flowering could kill this small Brug.

Here's another cute one.
This is one of my first cuttings taken from my own Double White, just to see if I could get it to root. It y-ed at 2 1/2 inch. It's about a month older than the Monster.
No alley trees here, LOL

Wow! All I can say is, you sure picked up the know-how on growing brugs. You have that ole' green thumb. I have had them bloom that small before, seems to stunt the growth of the plant. After it bloomed, it hardly grew, until the next year, when I put it outside.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

what happy brugs you have!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL. How cute! It would be hard for me also to cut off the blooms. I would let it flower then transplant it to a bigger pot and fertilize. I have had my DW cuttings do this...........and they did OK.
they sure look happy!

Ellabell, GA(Zone 8a)

Ludger, you are supposed to wrap bad news up in some fluff to take the edge off. Something like: That Brug looks like it really wants to bloom. When it grows up you will have lots of flowers, but unless you remove the buds now it probably wont make it there.
Just kidding, I kind of expected bad news.
How about the double white, is it to small too?
It's going to be hard to perform this amputation!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Yes I would take the pods of since it is so small. They have huge blooms. She's an incredible plant. You won't believe how fast she will take off when you put her in the ground.

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

Paintedlady,

the buds on your young brugs are looking very very good.

You used the absolutely right sized pots. Congratulations.

After I have seen them bloomed and maybe gone to compost because of spending all energy for the flowers...

I will very look forward to post a real nice " I am so sorry about your dead brugs " postcard.

Is this better ?????????????????lol.

It won't be hard, just clip them off. Yes it is sad, but you will undoubtably have many blooms this summer, it looks very vigorous and you will be amazed how fast it grows to 5' tall.

Ellabell, GA(Zone 8a)

The deed is done!
Dennis, you where right, it wasn't that hard once I got started. I looked at all the cuttings and took care of them all.
Donna, this is the smallest plant. I wanted to try the log cutting method so I split one piece up. Can't wait to see it bloom when it grows up.
Ludger, that's much better, LOL.
The photo is of todays bud harvest.

What a cute photo! Your a brave gal.

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

I like to see it done.
These lonly buds will give you strong and large growing Brugs this spring.

you poor baby! all those buds............... were they all on 2 little brugs? well be prepared for lots more to cut off, those really want to bloom. And you did not even leave 1 just to get a quick peek at what they will look like? Boy, you are tough! Hopefully you will get a nice strong side sprout that will grow tall for you if you want a tree like one instead of a bush.

Ellabell, GA(Zone 8a)

I got those off 5 different cuttings. I already know what the double white looks like, and the third bud is off Frosty, so that was no big deal. All the other ones are from 3 Monster cuttings, that hurt more but they were also the smallest plants.
If I get more buds on one of the bigger plants, I'm going to have to save one or two. My mom is coming to visit from Sweden in 7 weeks and I want to show her what they look like. Hopefully then she will understand why the kitchen table can't be used for sitting at. I have 2 shop lights with fluorecent bulbs and Brugs under it. No leg room, LOL

funny hoow they takeover your life isn't it? I am even dreaming brugs....in color no less. Tonny gave me some hybridizing pointers yesterday and I actually dreamed about the colored results.......I could have reached out and touched them they were so real. Dennis from Canada came to my house and tried to steal them........LOL. Sorry Dennis!

Anyway, your brugs look great! Adds such interest to your kitchen decor. LOL

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Paintedlady, don't feel bad about your kitchen table. Last year I think many of us sat with our dinner plates in our laps. LOL. I had Brugs everywhere there was an inch of space.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Oh my Paintedlady~that's a first for me. I've seen pod pictures like this, not bud pictures. Good for you!
And hanging the shop lights under your table is brilliant.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Here is a picture of monster brug blooming for you. She grows very fast, makes multiple on top of multiple branching, withstands heat with no problems and cold weather to a heavy frost, blooms profusely and most important I have never had any bugs get on her.

I think if you fertilize with a high nitrogen fert, it may help the plant produce leaves instead of buds, it is worth a try.
20-20-20 etc.

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

DonnaB, if you have any spare cuttings in the spring, I would love to have a couple. Nothing to trade but a voo-doo lily bulb, but would send postage (goes without saying). Email me privately if we can work something out. Gorgeous plant, would look great in my collection. :>)

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Awww, Paintedlady, you're breaking my heart!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

That was soooo sad......

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Especially how they are laid out for their funeral! Kind of creepy! LOL

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

How big should they be to safely leave the buds on them? I have a bud on Jamaica Yellow, and one bud on each of three Sunset plants. I've waited SO LONG for flowers, I don't know if I could be as brave as Paintedlady.

Ellabell, GA(Zone 8a)

God question Ronna! I hope somebody can answer that.
Donna, the Monster looks great. Thanks for posting the photo.
I'm really glad to her that she can put up with heat, I get plenty of that here. And no bugs, that would be the first!

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

When the pot is really rooted through with roots and little brug is starting to grow ( strong growing in summerlight) you can leave the buds

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Anna Z I will give you all you want but you have to wait untill summer. I have to cut her back every winter.
