Which Wood Mulch?

There are a lot of choices available to the gardener regarding wood mulch (bags). Pine, hardwood. Shredded, chipped, in large chunks. One year most of the annuals waned and died. I blame this on acidity. Which mulches would anyone recommend that are the most plant friendly?
