wrinkled cuttings

city?? lol sticks, AR(Zone 7a)

some of my cuttings are plump and I jsut KNOW they are healthy. I have some that are a little shriveled? Can they make a come back when they start to do that? I have tried to keep soil moist, --but not saturated. Hate to toss em out, and it turns out that they could have pulled thru. Any thoughts? Cheryl

Wrinkled usually means they are dead. Try cutting the dead parts off, and if it's rotten on the bottom in the dirt, cut that until you get healthy wood, then emerse the base of the cutting into water, and watch for little white nubs to appear, before planting again. Good luck.

I just never toss mine till they turn brown, lol!!

I don't throw anything out until it PROVES to me that it is dead! Everything that I've rooted so far has started out in water until it had some roots, so I can't help you on that front. Maybe one of the experts will be along pretty soon, I'm still a beginner.

Plays, over watering is one of the biggest killers of brug cuttings, about the only way i can think of. sometimes the whole top will die down on a cutting and it will put up a new shoot from the roots. i found one like that this week, boy it had green roots and looked like a big chunk of lettuce growing up, under the soil.
on the dry side is best for brugs until they develop good roots.

I agree with Arlene- don't toss them yet. The only way I don't think they would root is if they've been hit by the cold- then when they shrivel, it's for good. I traded with someone recently, she sent lovely big woody cuttings. However at some point they had been zapped by a hard frezze. They turned to mush within days (sometimes it just happens like that)

Hey Arlene, the cutting that I though was dead is sending up a TINY leaf from the roots. I'm SO excited.... See, don't toss them yet.

Very glad to hear that Kristi!

Arlene, do you think I'll have any luck with mature plants that have shriveled up? My HG shriveled up, even tho it was kept in the warm familyroom this winter. No sign of any kind of life right now. I have cuttings, so I won't be without, but sure would like to see the mother plant come back to life. Have no idea why it did this. Lost a couple of Pink Beauty plants in the basement, from the same symptoms. HG is still green looking, just no leaves anyplace on it.

Ms Brugie, that might be a european question, i haven't overwintered like you guys. last year my hg froze back. it sat in DDs bedroom for maybe 6 weeks, i watered it and it starting growing again, came back from roots.
i sure wouldn't get rid of it, would wait to see what happens when spring comes. maybe it's really dormant and saving energy to produce tons of blooms for you. no blooms from mine this year, i will have a special ceremony to shovel prune it. maybe i'll use the sawed off shot gun on it (just kidding).

Shirley,
HG needs much water in warm rooms. Also in winter. I lost a large plant because I did not water enough.
In warm rooms the brugs will not get rootdamage as in cold rooms, you can water more.

Arlene, be happy not to have such problems....lol.

Thanks you guys. I'll see what happens with time. I hope it had enough water. Never let it go dry anyway. Kids are here, so I don't have much time for posts today. Later....S
