We've been treating Fritz the Jack Russell Terrier for ear mites without much result. He scratches his ears and sometimes even has blood showing, and shakes his head a lot. Recently he has been holding his head at an angle and not wanting one ear to be touched. So today I took him to the vet, had an ear culture done and learned that he has a bad yeast infection. The vet says ear mites are not too common in dogs but yeast infections are. So I have an anitbiotic that gets administered twice a day, another thing that coats and soothes the irritated area, prednisone to be given twice a day to start reducing the inflamation, and in 3 days I have to flush out his ears with two different solutions. In a week he has to go back to the vet. I've got a feeling this is not going to be a cheap or quick fix, but after just one treatment the dog is more comfortable. Treating him was not fun, it took two of us. The vet says it may be caused by food allergy. I did some online research on dog ear yeast infections and learned two interesting things. Flushing the ear canal with a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water now and then creates an invironment yeast don't like, and there is an oil made for human ears called Wally's Ear Oil that will help prevent recurrances. Since I am more likely to go with the natural things I will try these once we get the infection knocked down and the ears clean. I can always go back to the vet if it flares up again.
Ear mites? Nooooo, worse than that
