I keep hearing that brugs are poisonous...so what are we talking here . Would you have to eat the whole plant to die from it, do I have to worry about planting these around kids ?
How toxic are they ?
not as toxic as castor beans. i don't think you have to worry about them particularly. kids have tried to get high on them and have died. i think seeds are the most poisonous part. the leaves are said to taste bad.
i used to have an aversion to poisonous plants until i realized the ones that i already had that were poisonous. probably at least half my plants.
they contain scopaline or something like that which will dilate eyes, for example if you had been handling and wiped your eyes, but i think that takes more than a little also.
Thanks Arlene, smile.
I am giving my copyrights to you. Just was translating what you have written.
I agree with each of your words.

We have had many discussions on this,so many people are leary because of the poison issue.
Tomato plants are poison
tons of plants are poison, its just that most plants that are poison are not eaten on purpose.People hear they are a hallucinogenic, and decide to try it,they sniff paint and gasoline, cause they wanna get high,so do you not keep paint and gasoline around because someone might abuse it?
the plants are gorgeous and do not deserve such a bad reputation......
Please reconsider,they are worth growing.....
Cheryl, I think you would be surprised to find how many are poisonious that you already have. . I know I was. When it comes to small children, I have always watched them very closely outside so that they don't put anything in their mouth. The ones a little older, I have always told them to never put any part of any plant in their mouth. Enjoy your brugs because while there are some plants less toxic, there are others that are more toxic.
Thanks everyone ! My kids are both teenagers so I don't think they'll be eating any of my plants :o) I was just curious because I had read in another post something abut them being toxic. Now another surprise for me is that castor beans are toxic..didn't know that either, oh well, I'm going to grow them and enjoy them anyway. I appreciate the knowledge I find here, you guys ( and gals ) are great !!
Good words from all.

Oleanders are VERY deadly..can be poisoned by just smelling the smoke of burning leaves off them.So use regular care and don't get paranoid about which plants are poisonous.Just don't eat em! (brugs) that is. LOL
:-)
I planted some inside the main dog yard 3 years ago.
After I chewed on a leaf just to see if I anything to worry about... if the dogs did?)(nothing) and man do they taste very very bad. NASTY
I don't think any animal 2 or 4 legged will eat them raw.
(The "TEA" is made by cooking)
A friend of mine did get her eyes dilated a little; while making cuttings and rubbing her eyes. It didn't last long.
Now I would never do that with the Oleanders. I do have morning glories planted on the fences.

I also wiped one eye after picking leaves, and didn't know why my pupil was dilated so I went to the doctor. It was the brugs. In general they are a very powerful plant.
I wouldn't be paranoid, but also you should be aware that they are toxic. Treat them with respect and you won't have trouble. I have a young dog who eats everything, including fallen leaves, so I wouldn't make a general rule about them safe for pets. They are bitter leaves, kids and pets are funny that way, ask poison control the crazy things that they must hear every day.
Here are a couple of links with the degree of plant toxicity. I read many years ago that probably 80% of the plants in our yards are poisonous! Even the lowly innocent Daffodil would make you sick!
