trumpet vines
Welcome to Dave's, it is good that you are at least getting started in the "trading game" but it is too cold for me to go out and look at my plants, let alone dig any up.....
come spring, we will all be ready to start trading. so hang in there.
Thank you for the welcome.Yes I guess I got kinda excited thinking of spring.I am looking forward to learning how to use this site.
You will have lots of fun...it will become addicting. you wait and see...
Hi & welcome,
If you get your cactus posted I would love to see them..I love all cactus and succulents and have a good many, but I am not too great with all the names..Welcome again..
Larkie
I am interested in knowing what the star cactus is. I live in Georgetown, so I probably have almost everything you have an abundance of, with a few missing in each of our pastures. I have collected seeds for most of the stuff that grows wild around here. We will have to compare notes. Oddly enough, I have never planted campsis radicans, or orange trumpet vines, though I have collected and mailed out millions of seeds. I also have some seeds for that beautiful desert willow, the one with sort of purple blooms. And lots of seeds for tecoma stans, also known as esperanza. Well, I could go on and on, but lets try to figure out what we don't have and swap something. I have been too long without a good round of trading seeds and wildflower perennials. Don't suppose you need silverleaf nightshade or blueberry juniper or tie vine, hehehe?
Thank you all for the welcome.Aimee if you go to cactus and suculents in the post Big Stinky Blooms Again ,Desert Rose has a pic. posted for what I called star cactus.I have lots of fence I want to plant vines on,and am interested in trying new things. We have only lived here a year so I have lots room to fill lol.I am not sure what a desert willow is but I have a pond with willows and would be interested in different types. My son goes to college in Georgetown so I go sometimes. We will have to do some trading for sure.I could bring you a nice big trumpet starter in the spring if not needed to be mailed. We mow it down at the old house it is everywhere. This is so much fun thinking of spring.
Ty for the welcome Larkie I am not up on the names much either,I am going to try and find the names out,I have a cheap camera and am going to try to get some good pic.s to post. But forgive me if i am slow lol
Yes Pebble this is getting addicting lol
Welcome, you are going to have lots of fun on here and you get to make friends with some of the best people in the whole world. Happy gardening come springtime.
The cactus sounds like the "Starfish" Stapelia..I have the gianganta one. They are very pretty..NotMartha, when your weather permits I would be glad to share..
larkie
The desert willow isn't actually a willow, I think. Will look later to be sure. It makes a long bean that becomes twisted and ejects the seed. But it does grow well in the desert country of West Texas, dry and brutal weather conditions. And it has been planted along the wall between Hwy. 183 and the service road, just north of Loop 360 on the east side. The way Hwy. 183 winds around in all directions, I need to clarify that: if you are headed from Austin to Cedar Park, you need to be on the service road as you clear Capitol of Texas Highway. That section of 183 will then be on your left, and the desert willows are in the grassy area between 183 and service road. Is that about as clear as mud? They don't look like much until they are in bloom, and even then they are a bit spindly looking in this area. But the bloom is lovely. There are many different shades between white and purple or lavender.
Rhondalinstat,
Hi, I just joined myself.
I dont know where you are, but
you must be in Texas?
I am having ro practically star
t my garden from scratch, due
to a mean ole bulldozer man....
I long to have a blackberry patch.
Aimee, I also miss esperanza, about
how cold do you think they can stand?
I know that they are new cultivars
out there, but I would be perfectly
happy with the old open-pollinated ones!
Love, Lav
Larkid
I would luv that!!! thanks for the generous offer!
I sure hope the weather breaks soon!
this is so cool-thank you so very much! =]
maybe we can trade something later
Hey hey Notmartha your garden looks so pretty.I am not sure if I have the same type Larkie has but would love to trade something and Larkie if it is different I would love to make a trade.Mine has flowers tip to tip maybe 10 inches or less.I am afraid I am not up on names of things.I appreciate the patience.
Thank you for the welcome Stormy19,yes I am allready meeting ppl and enjoying this site so much. And I have just started lolol.
Yes Lavanda I am in central Texas on Lake Travis about 30 min. From Austin. It is good to hear from you.I would be very glad to send some blackberries starters to you,but I am not sure when is the best time (we always transplant in spring)and I am not sure of the best way to mail plants. So if someone could direct me to the best way to mail I would very much appreciate it.I will learn :-)
Aimee I do not go to the big city too often but I am interested in those Willows and I am sure going to check them out.I saw them in the plant database ooohhhhh they are nice and look like a summer bloomer.I saw the esperanza and am interested in that too.Oh boy what a fun spring ahead.I could not find tie vine or blueberry juniper so I will have to find out about them.Thank you Aimee I am looking forward to trading with you.
Thank you all again :-)
An update I spoke to my husband (who is more knowledgeable than I)he informed me now is the time to send blackberry starters and he said to pack in damp sawdust with bubble wrap, they would be bare roots.Which surprized me cause we usually do the transplants in the spring.Any helpful hint would definetly be appreciated.Thank You
I missed this new stuff. Will try to remember to reply to all. I will try to grow Esperanza and desert willow from seed as soon as I get my back porch finished and can be sure of having shelter for the seedlings. I'm not sure about the hardiness range of Esperanza, but since they do well here they might work statewide. Can't hurt to try. Wal-Mart sold a truckload of them last year, for about $14 each. If we can get them from seed, it will save a bundle.
Blueberry juniper is what people around here call cedar, and the worst thing for allergies. Tie vine is a wild morning glory that is extremely invasive. I was being silly when I suggested them, but have actually sent them to people. I even sent mesquite to my sister, who was proud as a peacock when she got it. She wants a start of tassojillo, but I just have a real hard time sending it. Once sent prickly pear to a woman, who sent me great cacti in exchange. I sent over 200 wax leaf ligustrum to a woman in Washington several years ago. She grew them in her basement, afraid they would die outside. Here, they grow wild along the fenceline where the flying gardeners planted them. And I have sent white prickly poppy to lots of folks. I like it, too. I would plant bull nettle in my garden if I could figure a way to handle it. I love the fragrance. So, if I suggest something weird, don't be surprised, and if you want something weird, I will give it a shot.
Welcome Rondalinstat, I am in San Antonio and new to Dave's also, but already an addict. I put out 6 tomato plants today that I started in Jan. They are about 10 in tall, so I buried them deep and put a wall-o-water around them. I would love some of the blackberry roots. I have 1/2 acre I am trying to fill up with some of everything!!! will be glad to start cuttings of some of the things I have , to trade with you, or pay for shipping, or whatever arrangements would suit you. Everyone here is VERY nice. I am having a ball getting to know people, and participating in the coop and round robin. SEEYA, Margie Lou, aka "Queen of Dirtland" LOL
Margie, my DD lives in San Antonio. I garden there at her place when I am able. If you want some canna this summer, let me know, I simply must thin it. I bought it at Wolfe's about ten years ago, and it wasn't what the label said, so I dug out most of it and either gave it away, planted it in SA or composted it. But all it takes is one year and it is crowded again. It has small flowers, not the large floppy ones, and is a sort of orangey red. I wanted pink.
Welcome Loudigger,I would love to arrange for a trade on blackberry starters, but watch where you plant them they seem to really reprouduce when they get settled....ah happy plants lol.I am going to send off balckberry starters at the end of this month,Feb.I would be happy to trade so let me know.I have this list so far as trades...Sems-trumpet vine....JCF-blackberry.....LittleHawk-Rose of Sharon,Trumpet vine........Aimee-blackberry.......I will need your addy's and can wait awhile on the trumpetvine mailings if needed. But think the blackberry starters need to be planted soon
Hi Ronda, You are probably outside right now, where I will be in a few mins. It is beautiful here. I would love to do some trasding too. I am just now starting cuttings of some old fashioned roses. I have a neat single bloom one that gets about 4' tall and blooms all year. It is called Kirsten Poulson. The blooms are a magenta color. I also have one called Marjorie Fair, single blooms in big clusters on broad fountain shaped plant. Long repeat bloomer. rosie red color. Have a few other perennials I could send, Six Hills mint with blue flowers. Salvia indigo spires, gets 3-4' tall, with long spires of purplie blue flowers. Deer won't eat these. garden sage. pretty leaves and blue flowers, get 3-4' tall I will tell you more when I think of them. Let me know if any of these interest you and I will pot them up now. SEEYA, Margie Lou
Rhonda, got your email and will get with you soon. I was in San Antonio a few days and am way behind in everything. I do want to trade, and I agree the blackberry vines need to be out soon. If I drop the ball, nag me.
Wow Loudigger I would be real interested in your old fashioned rose starters. They sound real nice.Oh Boy this is fun!!We will have to make a trade. My sage that we use for sausage died last year a big silver bush,I am needing to replace it this year.
Aimee I suppose they can be traded at your convienence.I know when spring comes I will be getting busy,I am looking forward to it.These blackberry bushes have been so happy I don't think much hurts them.I hope you had a fun San Antonio trip.
Rhondatinstat, Lavanda, and Aimee, It looks like we might have the makings of a swap meet! I know there are a few more DG friends in the cent tx area, and have heard talk of a fall roundup. Lavanda, if you are on the So. side of DFW, it might not be too far for you to come to a meet. I know I would enjoy meeting all of you, even though I am new to the group. Any others that might be interested, chime in with your suggestions.
I am going to the boats in Shreveport this week end, but will start more cuttings next week of roses and the sage you were interested in Rhonda. I think it is the same one I have, it has spread and rooted, so I can make some nice size plants from it.
SEEY'ALL Later, Margie Lou, aka Queen of Dirtland LOL
Hi, ya all. I'm not in TX, but I'm not far. I'm in TN and would love to trade for any heat loving plant or cuttings, or most anything else. I'm new here and just getting over a long term illness, and am excited to finally be able to garden again. I see the trumpet vine growing all over here along the fenced pastures. I hope you can just dig them up and transplant, I'm going to nab some. I've got iris's that need dividing. Also, have lots of vinca minor. And I am going to get cuttings soon from the wisteria, red apple and a small sweet pear tree. I can get cuttings from wild and tame honeysuckle, mulberry tree. I love cactus and have some of the type that produces apples. I miss living on the high desert where mesquite is plentiful and I miss my farm with the pretty pussywillows. I have raspberries out back and rose of sharon in front. I'm glad to meet you all.
Welcome Rhondalinstat,
I too am pretty new to the site, I really would
enjoy trading some those trumpet vines and blackberry shoots you have, please check my list, I hope you can use
my items.
I have been searching for trumpet vines shoots for a while. I have tryed starting them from seed this past month, they grow the first 2 leaves then they puke out. I dont know what i am doing wrong! Alot of the posts i read say they are invasive and grow like crazy, not mine.
I have a place in Pocono mts. and enjoy watching the wildlife there, esp. the bears they love ripe blackberry!
Have fun at DG!
Sandee in New Jersey
Rhonda, it sure looks like you're having fun!! :) I'm so glad you're jumping right in. If you need some more pointers on sending plants in the mail, give me a holler. About that Desert Willow ~ Marthola Thomas has a purple flowered one in her front yard, right next to her driveway in front of the garage, on the left. Have you ever noticed it? I imagine it's bare right now, but I'll keep an eye on it and give you a call so we can go see it when it blooms. It's such a pretty thing!
I need to visit y'all in daylight and see what all y'all have planted lately. You'd think I could get over there more often, but you live just SO far away ~ that quarter mile is just SO far to go. *wink*
Speaking of Rhonda's place, y'all should SEE it!! It's incredible! Huge pecan and cypress trees, spring fed creeks, lots of room. She and her DH have done some beautiful things there ~ gorgeous house, big veggie garden, and a huge pond complete with lilies, dock and paddle boat! The latest addition is a really cool fire pit ~ we all cuddled up to it a week ago last Saturday night. FUN!
Oh my gosh, Moda! Were those cubs in your yard! How cool!! Well, maybe not if mama wasn't far. *shudder*
Moda, I was just enjoying your bear cub picture, how cute! My son lives in the Poconos (Creso, Pa)but could care less about gardening! If you don't find a trumpet vine, let me know, I might can get one here in Fl. They are invasive here but I don't have them in my yard yet!
Hola ya'll,
I dont know HOW I lost track of this thread, except I have been quite ill and then the site I use for my dave's email crashed, and has not ocme back up yet!
!!!!
Somehow, the rest of the above message was cut off. Of course, I havent had any coffee yet, so I may have done something stoopid myself and zapped it.
Anyway, blackberries are wonderful. I LOVE the flavor of them, specially warm from the sun, just-picked ones.
When we had them in the Valley, it seemed that just by
mowing close to them, some little tips would fall to the ground and root themselves.
What more can you ask for: self-propagating, and provides
beautiful fruit as well!
The way I would mail them would be to clip them, wrap in moist paper towels or old rags (does anyone keep rags anymore?) then, in a plastic bag with a twist tie around the neck of the bag with the leaves sticking out of the bags.
If anyone can spare any, I would be willing to pay or reimburse you until I get my stock of trades built up this year.
This year I am somewhat of a beggar, but next year, God willing, I will have an abundance of things to share.
As for Central Texas, I have a dear friend in Bend,TX on the LLano river. I visted her last september, and we had a blast driving around, collecting rocks, fotos, and seeds. Saw deer and other wildlife, and I brought some cactus pads back to root. (I MUST find that roll of film and get it developed!)
It is BEAUTIFUL there, much more than I had imagined.
Would love to get together with any of ya'll interested in doing so.
Has anyone been to the Ft Worth botanical gardens or the
Dallas Arboretum?
Love to ya'll, chatty Lavanda!
Well welcome Auzzie and Moda,Thank you Lavanda!I have gotten real lost in my world here,I got 445 flowering bulbs for my B-Day!!!I have been one busy beaver and I also decided I liked doing rock work so I am rocking terrace gardens on a hill here.So I am afraid I have neglected Dave's garden.Thank God for the ultra bulb planter Wingnut got me for my B-Day!!!!Many many thanks Wingy ole gal!!!!I am letting you know you haven't lost me I am just side tracked right now.
Rhondalinstat,
