Saw these humongous things in the Dutch Gardens new catalog. Just wondering.........has anyone ever grown these as container plants? I live in zone 4b, so no chance of even trying them outdoors, but I have a greenhouse that I could winter them over if they could be in pots. I love big, unusual plants. Would LOVE the amorphophallus titanum that Plant Delights has this year, but Spouse balked at the $100.00 price. Darn. :>)
Giant Gunnera
Anna,I tried and lost a gunnera last year,Weez says they are all over up there,I'm looking for another one,if I locate one I'll let you know,Mine was the cutest little thing:)
Root........the price is $16.95 for one bareroot plant from Dutch Gardens. LMK if you find something nice for less. I don't like ordering from catalogues much anymore, things are never as they are pictured! :>)
Mine was $10,in 4inch pot,I asked Shirley to Jog my memory,Its tough getting senile so early,LOL
Rooty,
You might try Plant Delights in Raleigh, NC. Tony Advent carries many "exotic" and unusual plants.
Shirley
I talked with Kim there about getting an Alocasia fontansii, allso gunnera, she said they didn't have it,I'll try again
id check on ebay too!
I tried to find some to look at when we went to the Or. coast, but had no luck,I don't no what the restrictions are on shipping these, but I would sure like to have one to try again,I do believe they do better further up the coast, the seem to like England also.
Probably just need a phytosanitary certificate. I'll check a website for tropicals and if they have them I'll post the url.
Just checked and he has them and ships to the US.
www.tropic.ca/PriceList.htm
The owners name is Ray Mattei and is a really nice guy.
The cost for 1 gallon gunnera is $25 Cdn. which makes it $16.25 US. Cost of phyto is about $10 US.
I know he wholesales to the US but not sure if he does for individual plants. Email him.

Rootdr. - take a look at this site.
I had some in 1 gal pots two years ago..but all ended up dead..they don't like our summer heat. They like year round cool and humid. :-)
I'm going to try again,I'm waiting to hear from the one Liz listed,to see if he will ship just a few,:)What did you think of yours Eclipse?Like em enough to try them again?I have been talking to a man that grows them in Az.
Rootdr. - I have a huge one. You need to put it somewhere that gets almost constant root moisture - like a pond side or a low part of your garden where there is water. But then I don't live in your climate. I'm in the PNW - not too hot and not too cold. We don't have hot humidity - we have liquid humidity in the winter.
Heronswood is a mecca for plantspeople.
Heronswood just got back to me today,I may give it a go with them, only thing is to make the shipping worth it I may as well order $60,I just got my Dutch Gardens catalog and they are going to have it for 16 a bareroot,I may end up trying 3 or 4 to see if I can get one to go,:)
OH WOW,I love it and can't grow it .........I hate it...
I'll leave it at that.......
can it grow here?.......
CC I am determined to grow some,Wow Liz your teasing me,That is one good looking plant! How many years have you had it growing?I don't know if I should try Bareroot,Heronswood ships live plants, and that is a plus in my book,:)
It's been in that spot for about 4 years. There is a dip there so it's damp. The leaves die down during the winter and I cut them off and lay them over the crown to protect it. The leaves really are quite huge when they're full. Spikey undersides and stems. They're quite common around here.
I would love to see it Liz,I believe they don't like Nitrogen, that may be where I went wrong,What you explained sounds like the way everyone settles thiers in for winter
I just saw what forum this is - LOL - can I call where I live tropical now?
If I can call mine the Sahara,we have had no measurable precip in over 60 days,Believe it or not I'm watering in January!
AnnaZ,take a look at this place,http://www.worldplants.com/
Root.
Anna, they have Gunnera in Helsinki Botanical and one of my friends have it (in Eastern Helsinki)..
It has to be protected well for winter though.
Evert, I have a greenhouse...........no problem.
WOW Liz, your property is so gorgeous in every way excep the steps!
I SOOOOOOOO long for this plant! I may have to break down and try it. Soon! Lovely pic!!
I'm trying to sprout some seeds, I think it takes a while!
