Pod Harvest

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I gathered a bunch of brug seed pods today. I noticed some of the pedicels were turning yellow and some had started to loosen at the stem. I took my trusty razor and made a few little slits in a few of the pods and they were nice and brown. I was really excited about some of the pods that were ripe because they were on Knightii and Tiara.

Some Versicolor Peach pods. I know the pods don't look ripe, but trust me, they are. I had noticed some little brown spots starting and that's usually a good sign, especially with the versicolors.

thanks for posting, Cala. No doubt you are gonna be queen of brugs with all the fancy seeds you set this year.

Kyles Pink pods. I left a couple of pods on the plants that didn't look quite ripe before going on vacation and when I got back, they had a bit of mold on them. Those were ruined, the seeds inside were bad so now I'm picking them before they get a chance to ruin. I peeled a few of these seeds and no hollow ones so far.

Gosh Cala - that looks like the mother load!! Sounds like you'll have some great crosses to play with. I hope you get some wonderful babies.... maybe this is the year fr that double pink!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Wow Cala you are going to need 5 more acres to plant all those babies.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I can't believe the difference in pods! Great pics for your brug site Cala.
I also did not realize they would rot if left too long. I was thinking that in nature they would just dry up and open and relese their seed. You learn something new every day here! Thanks Cala

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Good grief! You qualify to be called one of the Pod People. You probably have dozens more right?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'm crossing my fingers that I'll get more than a half dozen pods next year. Will try to push a few brugs to bloom early. Great looking pods Susie.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Cala . . what a wonderful harvest of seeds you have. I find the difference in the shapes of the seedpods interesting and I am so glad that you posted them. What a wonderful time you watching these grow and bloom!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Wow,you are all podded up......

Dang, went to your store, they're not in there yet.......LOL

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

You lucky gal, they look great! Will you start them now or wait till spring? Kristi

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Liz, yes, there are lots more. I'm thinking that I'm going to have to cut a bunch of green pods off Eventide though. I think they are just draining the mother plant too much. I cut a bunch off before vacation, and the poor thing still is pityful. It must have had a hundred pods. I've noticed that the ones that are loaded with pods just don't look as good as the ones with only a few pods.
Datdog, I started a few of each cross. I'm quickly running out of room. I've already planted over 700 seed. I guess those pathways in the garden will be more narrow this coming summer!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hey pretty Pod Queen! I accidently cut of a branch with 2 pods from my DW about 5 weeks ago. I had only about 2 inches of stem from the 1st pod. NO leaves. I put it in water and it got knobbies. I then planted it up and it has just put out several new leaves. The pods look fine........still green! So do not toss the pods and stems away, Cala!

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

I am sure it will be one beautiful site in the garden this year Cala. Way to go! I am sure there will be some real beauty's coming.

Cala,
Maybe Bill will set you up a new greenhouse...that's a lot of seed pods. I too have run out of room and I no way have that many.

Glory, I've taken over a big part of the poinsettia house as it is. When he saw how well the store was doing(and I contributed toward the gas bill for the ghouses), he relented a bit. Now the problem will be finding a place to plant them all when summer gets here.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hoop House time Cala!

Congrats indeed Cala. I must say I would be enthused as well. I can't wait to see what your whiskers cross brings you as I can only imagine what nice hybrids you crossed with this one. Are you going for more yellows, oranges, pinks, peaches...great selection of pod parents for sure at any rate. As always I'm sure the pollen donors were as exceptional as the pod parents. I'm drooling in anticipation of the beauties you have created.

Can't wait to see all your new crosses in bloom.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Can you imagine a field full of Callas crosses in bloom?????

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

CC, what a visual! you could take photoes for days.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Quite a collection, should be some really good ones in there! Maybe the double pink we have all be waiting for.

(Zone 6a)

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Some of the pods were Tiara X EP and Tiara X L'Amour; Knightii X EP, Knightii X L'Amour, Knightii X Butterfly; Whiskers I crossed to several good ones, Butterfly(crossed to anything pink, lol) had lots of pods too. Milk N Honey X Eventide, Tequilla Sunrise X Butterfly. I'm planning more crosses for this year.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Cala.........you are the Pod Queen!!! This summer is going to be so much fun!

(Zone 6a)

Cala, if you don't end up with some real beauties from all your crosses there is just no justice in the brug world:) Hope you make lots of crosses this summer using doubles for the mommy.

Cala, if memory serves me another hybridizer told me that Knightii has some recessive pink in it. Heres hoping you get a pink to show up for you. Here's hoping you get something trully special from them all.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Thanks Eric, I've got my fingers crossed. I have some pods on Golden Lady that I keep wishing would get ripe, also some pods on Enchanted Double White.
