help me understand

lets pretend you have a brug that is 4 foot before it Y's out. Will the distance between the base of the tree and the Y lengthen or will it stay the same the following year? I have seen really tall brug pics but am not sure if the trunk wll get longer or not?

I don't think so,it's like sticking a nail in a tree, the nail never goes up,I could be wrong,LOL wouldn't be the first time!

It all depends on whether you grew it from seed or from a cutting.

If you grew it from seed, then the Y should stay relatively at the same height.

If it's from a cutting, then the trunk will grow more. Hope this helps.

I found that the original "Y" stays the same height from the ground but then new "Y's" form on that one and they are the ones the subsequent flowers come on so that the actual flowering part of the plant gets higher and higher.
If you want to get the original "Y" closer to the ground, I air layer it and cut it off and root it, thus reducing the length of bare stem below the flowering parts.
Here is one of my air layered sites.

Sorry, I meant plant it after the airlayered site has rooted, not cut it off and root it.

RA49 this is a great picture of air layering. Those roots really look good. What did you use for rooting medium inside the plastic? I've used spaghnum, but that is the only thing I have tried.

Brugie, thank you. :)
I started this one in Oct. on Enchanted Double White but the GH is too cool I think to do the separating on it just yet.
I used a 50/50 mix of peat moss and potting soil dampened with a Transplanting solution. I had to add to the soil a month ago because the roots were getting so big.

Good to know. Thanks so much.

RAF9....I think they can easily be separated......tons of roots. I have cut off 7 foot cuttings with no roots and they do fine.
