Have anyone of you tried that? I am going to try that! It said it s best time to do that from 6 am to 10 am.. Today I put two feeders close to the window. One of the birds flew and hit the window. Opps! Bird got up and fly away! There's full of red cardinals at the feeders. I am trying to take pictures and post it! Beautiful!!
Birds feed on your hand...
I've seen a wooden cutout dubbed "Bill" that is used as a bird feeder but it looks like a human man. You put it out in the yard with birdseed in his hand and put something with human scent on the cutout so the birds get used to the sight and smell of humans. Supposedly then you can go out and feed the birds from your hands. I have hand fed hummingbirds (kingbirds?) in Jamaica. They perch on your finger to sip nectar from the bottles. It's incredible to see them so close! Try it.
I was taking a hummer feeder out after cleaning and refilling it one time. I stopped to look at some plants on the way to the hanging spot. I guess I took too long, the hummer decided to come and feed from it while I was still holding it.
I didn't think about trying that again, but I will next summer. The hummers show up here towards the end of March.
I thought about hanging one of our old rain ponchos outside on a t-shape made of wood, with a cup of feed attached at each end. Then I could later put the poncho over my clothes when I wanted to feed the birds. I've never tried it, though. I saw that Bill guy in Birds & Blooms, too - cool idea. :)
On that bill guy feeder, they said you can do it at home, and dress it up in your clothes and a hat, once they are use to landing on the fake, you put the clothes on and they'll land on you......
I just figured the poncho would serve the same purpose, only I wouldn't have to completely change clothes when I wanted to feed them. They'd be used to the color and shape of the poncho, wouldn't they?
It should but a poncho will flap in the wind,it might keep them away,a large shirt, soft material that doesent make a lot of noise in the wind seems the best bet, flannel maybe....
True, could use a big old flannel shirt to put on over my clothes. I just figured they'd get used to the poncho's movement, plus it would keep me from looking like a poop-covered statue, LOL!
GW: Why not use a housecoat/smock like older ladies wear? It's sort of long like a poncho but wouldn't make as much noise and you'd only have one thing to put on.
ROTF, I own one of those! Got it when I had surgery a few years ago and the nightgown pickin's were slim, LOL!
Sorry, GW--not trying to insult anyone. My Grandma had a ton of them when she was in the nursing home so I always associate them with her.
Oh, you didn't offend me a bit! It's a big joke between Howie and me...My sexy nightgowns left over from the great surgery of 2000! :D They're a tad sexier than flannel, but not much.
We have had a mockingbird come to our hand and eat mealworms. They are very brave and bold birds! It took about a week or two to get one to do it. I'll post a photo of my husband feeding one...They are especially aggresive in the spring when they have young ones to feed.
I never try but the quails feed on my hand. LOL
