I just joined DG recently, and the first place I headed was here. I am amazed at how close knit you all seem to be, seems like a nice 'place' to get past these cold wet days until spring. I only have a few brugs, and actually they are only cuttings. lol but everyone has to start somewhere, and Im excited about those lil guys!!! I wonder if there is a way to encourage these cuttings to grow taller before they "y-out" (o.k. --I made that word up) Or is this more or less preprogramed into the cuttings? Your replys would be most welcome. Cheryl

Hi Cheryl! Welcome to DG!! Yup - this brug forum is the best around. I'm sure you'll love it here.
Welcome, Cheryl. i think it's kind of predetermined about how soon they bloom, depending on the part of the plant the cutting was taken from.
Hey Cheryl,Welcome,I'm new at this too.Why do you want them to get tall before they Y-out?
Hi Sheryl ,
welcome here. You have found the best Brugforum all over the world. Where are you? South, North, USA, CA or..lol.
Please forgive this questions, just curious.
Ludger from Germany

Welcome Cheryl . . your gonna love it here.
What a warm welcome! I live in the rice fields of rural Ar. I love water gardening and tropical fish. I grow lots of roses, which are the most wonderful/cursed things--we hae high humidity, and I am forever fighting blackspot. I have just discovered brugs and I think the roses better behave themselves this summer of they might be evicted. lolol I have enjoyed you forum and wanna plaaaaaaaaaaaaay too!!! I want my brugs to get tall before they Y because ummmm I think the taller they are, the more drama , but then again---they are pretty dramatic anyway. Or amybe its because im only 5 ft tall? lololol
Hi Rooty,
Iam fine today, thanks for asking!
Hope I could help you.
Greetings
L
Hi Playsndirt..........Cool name. Glad to see you here and hope you come here a lot and bring more new life to this forum. We never lack for anything to say around here, but it is always good to have new voices posting. Hope to see you soon, but right now I have to go watch a Bowl Game.
Welcome Cheryl! Not only will you meet tons of terrific people here, learn about brugs but we are also learning German by osmosis. (Ludger - osmose). LOL
Liz,
do not kidding me.........lol
Will throw with brugseeds and you know: I am strong, will throw much...lol.
Lol

I know you ppl will think I am height obsessed, but I recieved alot of datura seed in a seed trade and Im wondering if the height is dependant on the type of seed, or if there is a way to influence the height. Do most all datura have the potential to become tall? And since Im spouting question out, I was told to soak seed before I planted it for about 24 hours,----after it is soaked, is there anything else I should do to help it germinate? Will prolly nag you all with very basic questions for awhile, please bear with me? cheryl
LOL - I'll make it easy for you Ludger - I'll let you know when the wind is blowing from east to west. That way you can save your throwing arm. LOL
Welcome playsndirt. The Datura seeds can be soaked for 24 hrs and planted. Brug seeds can be soaked too and planted or you can also peel the corky outer shell off and just plant the little bean inside.
Where are you from, Cheryl? Good to see you on here!
Ok Liz
You will be a good help to me.

Thank you Snow hermit,--will be picking eveyones brain for ever. I am in Arkansas, out in the boonies.:) How well do brugs do with heat,--I have a wonderful place that I want to make a 'screen' of brugs but it faces west, and Im worried about how they will do with full sun. Was kinna wondering about bugs eating them? I know they have ummm 'side effects' from ingestion, any hope that the nasty little sap suckers will O.D.?????
HI Cheryl,
Nice to meet you!!
I am pretty new here too! Soon you will see that we have found the right place to learn about Brugs.
When reading some of the posts on this forum I realize there is much to learn about brugs and these are the people that will educate us.
Let the learning and sharing begin.

As for the cuttings question....let me try to answer this one( don't shoot me all you experts if I am wrong) but.. I believe someone said that if the cutting was taken from above the Y it will grow faster and bloom faster than other cuttings so in a sense it is programmed into the cutting.
With the few I have I take all the little growing leaves off of the stem and just leave the top part to grow hoping this makes a nice standard looking tree and grows tall.
Good Luck and Welcome.
If I'm translating it right that is what ludger is saying above,so what we are talking about is cloning.?what say from seed? same?I'm new,so forgive me for such a dumb question. The plant needs to run a genetic path before it will bloom, brought on by the (Y)then clones from the upper branch are more likely to bloom early, and seedlings need to run the path before they will?
Welcome Playndirt and Crysrob! The more here the merrier. The good news is that most brugs grow fast so regardless of where you get your cutting, you should have a big plant in no time.
and Ludger........ and Rootdocotr
Marken fragen zu mir Art Ludger........ von wie mir ab. Als ich jung war, hatte ich eine Wachstumregion und wuchs auf und up und up. Dann begann ich meine blühende Region und wuchs heraus und heraus und heraus.
ROTFLOL Kell - thanks to systran! You're the tiny little thing you always were.
Cheryl,
I'm in the boonies, too, in Northeastern Oklahoma. I had my brugs on a west facing balcony last summer, partially shaded by overhead trees. They would have been happier on the east side of the house, but they didn't shrivel up and die. Make sure that the pots are big enough, and water, water, water! They don't like to sit in water (ESPECIALLY when the weather is cold), but in the heat of our summers, they dry out fast.
