Roots

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

I've got one Brug in the house that is not doing well. It's a variegated and the leaves keep shrinking and curling around the edges. No insects of any kind on it so I pulled it out of the pot to check the roots. They looked ok except for this hard ball which is at the start of the root system. Is this normal or is something wrong with the roots. Just can't figure why the plant seems to be dieing.
Edited to add could this be Nematodes???????

Oh my... Can you start some new cuttings? Arlene talked about nematodes, also had a root picture with them, awhile back. Maybe she will see this and tell you more about them.

Snow, i don't think so. nematodes are usually a southern thing in sandy soil, given enough organic matter and fertilizer plants can grow okay. the ones i had, the root ball was okay but the nematode root knot was at the stringy end portions of the roots. anyway, it doesn't look like my root knots.

Thanks Arlene. I'm baffled now. As new leaves start to grow on the top the lower leaves curl and shrivel on the edges and drop off.I don't want to lose the plant so sure would like to find out what the problem is with it.

I'm wondering if I should dig up my Butterfly and see if I have that kind of problem. It just isn't growing at all and now is losing almost all the leaves and shows no signs of putting on new growth. I don't want to lose the mother plant, but do have a backup in case.

maybe it needs some abuse, snow. you know how they are when you fuss over them. why don't you pot it back up and put it in a close for 2-3 weeks, bet it'll be glad to get in the sunlight again after that....lol..
it seems it's always the ones we are desperate for, doesn't it? at least for me.

I have been babying it Arlene. Had it in my bedroom in an east window with morning sun. Thought it might be my cool BR so I moved it to the warm sunporch in a west window and it's still having problems. :(
Hate to put in in the GH with the other Brugs until I know it's not sick.

Snow,
the roots look very good. Sorry this is the border of my english, I must use some " unusual" words:
I have had this hard balls at some aureacrossings too.
And flava and sangs too.
Its like a potatoe or tulips or lilies, not exactly this...
you can not use this ball like a bulb.

I have had some aureaseedlings freegrowing in GH last year( 02 lol) Not using a pot, just free in soil. When I repoted them in autum, all have had this carrotroots.

Loosing leafes in this dark wintertime is ok. Most of my brugs are doing this. No light enough...
Repot this brug and keep it warm and pretty dry.
And send a cutting to me,lol. I am looking for variegated...

Have you considered some kind of deficiency?
Lack of Calcium causes leafes to become small, margins chlorotic and incurled.
Lack of Manganese, stunted growth, leafs small, slightly chlorotic and strong forward curling of margins.
Lack of Phosphorus, restricted growth, leaves rolled forward, slightly pale and scorched margines.
Those are the ones I had written down but I'm sure there are others that could cause those symptomes as well.
