Are you taking care of your Elephant Ears from the co-op?

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

I'm embarrassed to admit that I just NOW planted a few of them. When they came in the mail I wrapped them in paper towels and left them all in a baking tin. I'd drop them some water from time to time- but truely my heart wasn't into it.
Needless to say, some of the EE's bit the dust. I do have at least one of each variety still alive.

For Christmas my husband set up a whole rack of grow lights as well as a pully system of grow lights for larger plants! YEAH..... So I'm happy to report that the EE's are now potted up under the grow lights. Hopefully they will forgive me and GROW *grin*!

Don't feel bad about killing some,I killed some that I potted up as soon as they arrived.....
I just have the touch!LOL

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

I potted mine up a day later, but most of them died back (hopefully). Only frydek has leaves. I never got a sheet about taking care of them, but I just put a little water once in a while in case the roots are still alive. I sure hope they are. Maybe yours are alive.

No, the little tiny tubers had turned to mush! But all is not lost, Black stem grew nice and happy in the paper towel as well as one other one- I'll have to go look. I can see a few tubers with little roots.
I should have known better then to order that time of the year. Heck, I have issues trying to get all my plants in the house. No time to baby plants. I just couldn't pass up a good deal. I'm still very thankfull to Calla for putting so much hard work into the co-op.
Next time someone needs to give me a good swift kick in my butt when they see me place a order, LOL...
Hugs* Kristi

Mine are all doing great and have leaves. I have them basking in a south window. Can't hardly wait to put them out in the spring, along with my newly aquired Brug cuttings, that have been potted up and growing.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I lost one variety (ordered three of each that I received) and have lost a couple other plants. One kind, Fallax, is not growing. Alive, but just not doing anything. It was one variety that was hit hard by the spider mites and maybe is just taking more time to recover. Three of the varieties are nearing a foot tall now and looking really good.

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Are you fertilizing them? I thought we were suppose to let them go dormant. Do you have one of those care sheets? I'll send copy money and stamped envelope if you'll send me a copy.

"down the Shore", NJ(Zone 7a)

I ordered two kinds: 'Nancy's Revenge', which is growing almost too well (for the available space) and 'Black Velvet' which is compact and has gorgeous leaves. I just potted them up on arrival, and grow under lights. Happy with mine... John

Wasn't it just the gingers that were supposed to go dormant?
The first round of the EE's are doing really good for me. The second batch were kind of bad when I got them. I just figured that the cold got them in transit. Most of them were mush when they got here.
I hope we can order some more in the spring. I would love to be able to replace at least the ones I lost. :-)

Middle, TN(Zone 6b)

Well, cross your fingers, mine are all doing great. It is a long time 'till spring so anything can happen between now and then. Maybe I will be lucky though and they will all make it.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

mine are doing good-i had a few pass away while i was at the hospital-but most are doing really well. some big some medium!

I've lost a few, some are still "hibernating", some have beautiful foliage and some have already been traded away. I've purposely kept them in small pots and only keep them moist (not wet). I haven't fertilized or planted them outdoors, since I don't think that they would appreciate snow and/or ice storms....They were so inexpensive, if any don't make it, I'll just re-order the "lost ones", when they become available again through the Co-op.

Woodville, TX(Zone 8a)

I have some EE's that are doing well and 2 varieties that "seem to be dormant"(May be wishful thinking on my part.) About half the gingers were dormant when I got them so I potted them up but am keeping them cool and dry. The ones that were still green are now starting to yellow. I was keeping these on the dry side too. According to the directions it says they can be kept loose so I'm assuming they can be kept dry like dalias or caladiums and then plant mid March and water at that time. I've never grown these before so please correct me if I'm wrong. I sure hope I can get some of these to make it through.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Oh, I should have enclosed a care sheet in those too!! I hate to admit, but I lost some too. I overwatered them and then let them get too cool. I checked the tubers though, and most are just resting, not dead. I don't have any that are a foot tall though, I need to know your secret!! I do think the cold weather while in transit caused some to not do so good.

Susie, it is my Amazonica, Frydek, and HiLo Beauty that have grown so well. Others like Nancy's Revenge and Black Beauty are doing pretty well too, but only about six inches tall. I only water them with half strength fertilizer once a month right now. Just plain tap water the rest of the time. I do keep them fairly moist since they are under light. I got three of each of the varieties I ordered and maybe the tall ones came with the first order. Anyway, I potted each variety in one four inch pot and have basically ignored them, especially until I found the mites on the smaller ones. I'm totally happy with the way they are growing. Buying them in a three inch pot, a little older, would have cost a fortune. I have time to wait on them to grow up. Thanks for your work on this co-op. Had to be a big headache getting it all done.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Sorry to say I have lost nearly all of mine. They were doing fine, then the power went off in the gh when the temp went down in the 20's for a couple of nights. Boo Hoo - but, that's life, I have 4 trays of nothing but dried
leaves and sandy soil. Just hoping that by some miracle some of the roots survived.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Azalea - Don't give up yet! Your E.E.'s are probably just resting. Hopefully, they will spring to life when the warmer temperatures arrive in the Spring.
