Favourite aphid insecticide?

rural, WY(Zone 3a)

Does anyone have suggestions for sprays? I have been using kelthane for mites, but the aphids are unaffected. Especially helpful would be someone who has tried everything and found one real good one!

Thanks.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Dennis, I had aphids bad on a couple of my brugs in the basement and I used Avid. I have not seen any sign of them for weeks now. It is great for mites too. Nearly lost some of my baby EE's and they are saved and thriving. Have used EnstarII and Mavrik as well as Sevin and had good luck with all of them. I don't like to use Sevin when the brugs are blooming as it does ruin the blooms for me.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

can't find Mavrik here, anything readily available that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?? I used Bayers, isn't working.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

tiG, just about anything you can buy at Wally World will work on Aphids. I used something last year that was in a turquoise bottle from WalMart and it worked on everything. Just didn't come in large enough bottle. Just a suggestion, but if some of you could go together and order the Avid, you sure would not be disappointed. I paid $100 for 8 oz. but it only takes a quarter of a teaspoon for a gallon of water. I shared mine with a friend who wanted some and we thought it would be silly for each of us to purchase. I don't know how many teaspoons there are in two ounces, (shared 4 ways) but for 25 bucks, I think you would be really happy with it. I have spent way more than that just trying to find something that will work and this stuff is good for white flies and many other insects as well.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

There are 5 tsbs. to an oz. therefore if a bottle is divided up between 4 people, each person would get enough to make 40 gals. Since this seems to work on many pests, I would be willing to go in on this with 3 other people.

After spending over $40.00 last year on different sprays to get rid of spider mites in which none of them worked I finally bought some Avid. It is expensive but just two applications and the mites were gone. Just wish I knew about it sooner as I battled with them all last winter. As Shirley said it also works on other insects too.Well worth the money.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I'd love to go in with someone, but until the middle of the month, I'm broke for now. I'll have to fight them on my own until payday.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

I guess I'm lucky...I don't have much trouble with aphids (Safer's Soap has always done good for me) but those dadburn black knats, like fungas knats, really get my hackles up! Is that Avid stuff an all-purpose product?

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

I'm only going to tell this once, PLEASE BE CAREFUL! I use Raid, spray it way up towards ceiling, let the spray fall over your plants, and into the dirt. DO NOT SPRAY ON YOUR PLANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have not seen a gnat at all, finally got rid of all the mites, bugs in the soil, had to spray when I brought everything inside, sprayed up over plants, maybe once a week, for 3 weeks, everything under control.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Hibiscus, i never thought a couple of years ago i would like the raid but i sure do, use it at dusk outside. do you use the flying bug spray kind? that's what i use. i don't grow plants inside during winter, a few cuttings here and there.
that gardener guy used to be on the radio said spray the aphids off with the hose and the ground spiders will eat them, that's what i do outside. actually, i don't remember seeing aphids since i've had brugs. use it when i see white flies. i got white flies on my gardenias and i used this stuff that was supposed to last 6 months, can't remember what, a fairly expensive brand name, used straight on the gardenias. didn't hurt them a lick but it sure killed the white flies.
now the only thing that bugs me is that stuff i had so bad this year that turned the leaves yellow, it's a fungus. i bought bayer thinking that i would take care of it and used on some brugs. next year i'll be spraying rose stuff on the brugs real early to try to keep it from getting so bad.
everyone came to my house last yar had this affecting their brugs.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Bless you, Arlene.

I was afraid if I said this someone would kill all their plants, by spraying directly on them, which my SIL did! Lost all her plants, my fault!

rural, WY(Zone 3a)

Thanks everyone.
I haven't seen the Avid bottle but I thought it was just a miticide. The kelthane miticide doesn't seem to kill aphids, but I'll try to get more Avid. Here you need an agricultural permit. I am pesticide licensed and that turns out not to be good enough!
I will definately try (and be careful with lol) the raid.
Thanks.

Dennis, can you get Imidicloprid with your pesticide licence? Monika says it works great for aphids. You can either spray or water with it. If you water with it, it will take 10 days and no more aphids.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Hibiscus, that's what i do, i spray around the leaves so the spray mists around them. you should have seen me with that bad insecticide on my gardenias though, i didn't care if it killed them all! fortunately, it didn't....

rural, WY(Zone 3a)

Brugcrazy that sounds like a great way. I'll look into it, and will let you know.

Dennis, I'll go in with you on some if you can get it.

rural, WY(Zone 3a)

Great it's likely expensive and in large quantity.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I didn't search very far last night, but I hope you are right Dennis. All I found was expensive and in small quantity. $53 for 2 ounces. However it only takes 1/8 of a teaspoon to a gallon of water. The brand I found was Merit.

rural, WY(Zone 3a)

Thanks Brugie for looking it up. Actually that price doesn't sound too bad. Hopefully it's also available here!

Dennis, I know it's available here with a pesticide licence. The man that owns Cusheon Creek Nursery has bought it for mealy bugs on his cacti. I chatted with him about it before. You could give him a call to find out where he got it if your friend can't find it.

rural, WY(Zone 3a)

I'll call up evergrow, they have everything.

(Zone 6a)

What is the active ingredient in Avid?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Owen, it is abamectin 2%

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

hey,if these work on fungus knats do you think it will work on aphids?

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Abamectin helps against spider mites and cyclamen mites as well. But I would recommend to use three different akarizid sprays to avoid that the mites build up a resitance. Spider mites become very quick resistent and a before good working spray doesnt help anymore.

Imidacloprid is the best for aphids at this time. It can be sprayed or watered with the plants. The roots transport it up to the leaves and kills aphids, mealy bugs, bugs and helps with spider mites, but not satisfactory. When sprayed, it also works systemic through the leaves.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Avid is good for aphids, whiteflies and thrips too.http://www.syngentaprofessionalproducts.com/all_lists/index.asp?nav=all

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Bumping this thread for Hibiscus.

I'll put my plug in for AVID too. It worked great for me and the spidermite battle. I sprayed everything well once and I haven't seen any spidermites since. It's a lot of money but I think it's worth it.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Is AVID bought only at garden nurseries or can it be found at less expensive stores? Does AVID go by any other name?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Where do I find it?I did a google search and they all tell me how to use it but not where to get it...
except one place where they want 134.00 for 8 oz,is that good?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

No, that is too much Karyn. I paid 100 bucks. Write or call.................There are no shipping charges either unless things have changed. I got this information from Snowhermit. I hope it isn't against the rules to put this kind of information on the site. If it is, let me know and I'll delete it.

Thank you Shirley,I wrote it down quick incase it gets deleted.......

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I ordered it on-line - http://www.rosemania.com/

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

YIKES, it is mighty expensive!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

It is expensive, but it only takes a quarter teaspoon per gallon of water. Will go a long way mixed that way.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

oh I just loves the pics of the roses on that site. I found one that I just have to have.........brilliant pink iceburg!

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

last year spider mites where eating my tomatoes. thought it was just san antonio heat. made a tea with chewing tobacco and spritzed it on. had tomatoes 'til november. butterfly weed (milk weed) brings in aphids from everywhere. 1 part (any)detergent to 10 parts water will kill them overnight. it'll wipe out a wild bee hive if you need to do that. probably do it to any insect.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I worry about using the tobacco recipe on anything in the Solanaceae family, wouldn't that be like smoking while taking care of them? any thoughts on this??

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

That would be my concern too tiG. My friends who run a big greenhouse will not let anyone who smokes even transplant the tomato seedlings.
