Brugs growing in Washington

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Hi all! My first time ever growing brugs and while I don't have a formal grow light set up yet, I do have them growing in my kitchen garden window. I am growing cuttings. So far, so good! I do have to keep them watered and fed, and I've noticed some very thin 'webbing' that looks like spider webbing on some areas. I have been wiping them off, hoping for the best. I'm amazed at the growth rate and have even pruned one of them. I've got at least 5 months to go until these are ready for the outdoors here. Did I make a mistake by growing them now?

Sue - your doing good. Sounds like the webbing is spidermites. You need to spray them to get them undercontrol. A search for spidermites here will bring up lots of threads about them and some good home made remedies for sprays.

Hi Sue_WA, and welcome to the brug forum. Sounds like you are doing very well with the brugs, but as P. Sue says, it does sound like spider mites. Hope you enjoy your visits to this forum and also that you have a wonderful Holiday Season. See you back here soon.

Hello Sue, sounds like you are doing a great job with the cuttings. I think we all have cuttings growing right now. Mine are in the dining room with just the natural light no grow lights. I agree it sounds like spidermites . . I have some on one of mine right now. Merry Christmas.

Gosh Deb, you can really see those webs. Aren't they just about the most nasty little critter there is. They seem to sneak up on me and set up house before I even realize it. I must say that the Avid I've used has really taken care of them. I haven't sprayed for several weeks now. The mites had nearly killed my baby EE's and they are looking good and healthy now. Merry Christmas!!

Sue - I think you'll find that you can put them out way quicker than 5 months. My bigger ones go out in mid to late March(normally) The smaller ones go out mid April. If it's raining right now at your house we have the same weather.

Shirley, Mike got me a new camera for Christmas . . they are showing up in the photo really good. Just using soap & water right now but might have to try the Avid.

Hi everyone, thanks for the tips about the spider mites. I did have those nasty things and they spread to my kumquat tree and bay tree in the window also. I took everything out and sprayed with 'Garden Safe' and it immediately took care of the problem. The brugs are coming back greener and stronger. I have been feeding them once a week.

Liz thanks for the tip on putting the brugs out in spring. I will try it with one of them at least and see how it does. Hope you are getting the sun today like we are, it's a beautiful day today!

Yes, it's a postcard day isn't it? Just like spring.

Sue...don't prune them to keep them short..you delay the blooming cycle that way..just let em grow and move to a bigger window ;-)

Sue...I found spider mites on my HG Brug the other day...sprayed all the underside of the leaves with water two days in a row....spider mites gone. I will continue to do this for a week...just to make sure. JMTC(Just My Two Cents)

Sue, isn't the weather glorious for January. I've never seen a January with such warm, sunny days. Oh the glorious WET ( or not so wet) COAST.
