Here is a picture of a Plum Iochroma Donna B. brought to me...isn't it pretty.
For those of you that don't know the Iochroma is in the same family as the Brugmansia.

Plum Iochroma
Very very nice!
Its as pretty and interesting as any Brugmansia. I still got the blue one I got from Cala this spring. It branched into three strong branches. No flowers yet, but I know that they will come, when it get bigger. The one I saw at the botanical garden was a small tree with a thick trunk and reminded me about a Brug, but with more flowers when blooming. :)
btw. Cala, where are you? I miss to see you post.
Hi Tonny........ I wonder if yours is one I sent to Cala to root. I sent her huge pieces to cut up and root months ago. She had not much luck but got a few to root. She just figured it out and I am sending her more hunks of it to root. I miss her here also, she has to advise me now by email! And I need lots of advice!! LOL She just left for vacation yesterday. Maybe when she comes back she will stop in at Dave's.
I think I also have been successful with them, I have not pulled them to look at the roots but they sure look like they have taken so anyone I promised cuttings to hopefuly will get them in the early spring
I personally do not find them all that interesting. I have 3 and they are about 6 feet tall...... they are bush like but not neat looking.......... kind of grow all over. I am going to make one that has the wider bells into a alley tree.
Heavens Kell...that is so big....is it pretty?
I had the blue one to but it didn't return this year.
I miss Cala too.
Kell,
Do you keep your Iochroma trimmed all season or just let it keep growing till fall?
LOL Glory... maybe that was my problem........... they are all over! No, I never cut them except to try to root them. One branch on one grew straight up and is very thick and sturdy. That is the one I was going to keep, and cut down all the other stems. I promised Judith cuttings of each and she will have them even if it kills me. She has been desperate (why I do not know) for them for ages.
See you truly have a green thumb Gloria. They were dying on me. That is the only one out of 6 that is still alive.
They are feautiful !!!
And I miss Calla too!
I miss Cala too! I have the red Ichroma and need some advice on rooting it. I have it in my basement now with the dormant brugs ... and boy soes it look awful!! It's still alive though and the poor thing is struggling to put flowers out. I've even tried the air layering method with it but the last time I checked it still hadn't made any roots.
glory and donna, that is a beautiful color.
i miss cala too. hope she comes back. would love to see pics of what her jungle house is doing now also.
Tonny, i am glad to see you and i sure hope lene feels okay, and that the problems are not too serious.
Very pretty blooms Gloria. I think you can grow just about anything.
Like Kell said Susie is on a much needed vacation. At one time, she thought they might be able to stop by my house but they took a different route to see some other sights along the way which would put them at a greater distance from me. Would have loved to have been able to see all of them again but I know there will be another time. I wish them all a safe and relaxing trip.
Looks like a nice plant to me,I think that it would look good among my brugs
Poppysue, try just the new growth tips in vermiculite. That is what Cala found worked well for her. I use soil, but did root tips also. Before I had done the woody stems and they all died. I think I got 1 or 2 to live but now can't find them........LOL
So yours is a true red? I wonder how many colors they come in.
My problem is space. They get so big, I rather have another brug to take up the space. But I am so funny, when I saw them at a nursery I grabbed them because of all the admirers at Dave's. And now that I want to get rid of them, I read what you all say and think maybe I should keep them! LOL. I was going to dig them up and send them to Judith, but they are too huge now. I find it hard to kill a heathly plant, takes me forever to do the deed and then if I finally decide to, I send my DH out to do it. That is why my yard is just solid plants, survival of the fittest. Let them decide who will live and who will die.
Here is a favorite picture that belongs to Cala, I gave her the green thumb! LOL she deserves it!
I love mine. No, they can't compete with the Brugs, but they sure do put out flowers all the time. I've got a few rooted, and the original plants I pulled up, put in my little lean-to greenhouse, and they are doing just fine. I would like some advice on how to keep them from being so out of control and straggly. Should I cut the suckers and try to just get two or three main branches? As for rooting it poppysue, I tried several methods, and the best one seemed to be rooting the tender tips by just sticking them in sand and keeping well watered.
LOL Agapanthus
"I would like some advice on how to keep them from being so out of control and straggly."
ME TOO!!!
Though the huge one at the nursery was a tree, all trunk and branches staight up so maybe they need some age to them.
Give them a good hair cut a couple of times during the growing season...they will look rather sad at frist but in no time they bounce back.
I love the color of this one.
Thanks, Glory, will do that. The deep purple color sure does compliment the Dr. Seuss.
I think I was some so badly just because I've had such a hard time gettng one! But I do think they'd make an nice foil for the brugs.
MsBatt, check back with me in the spring, and if I've been succssful with rootings, will be glad to send you a couple. OR, you can pay postage for the huge wine one that is doing just fine and should make through the winter. LOL
