Hi, I'm Cathy from Northern New Mexico. Two years ago we bought this place, a 50 year old log cabin. It was actually built from trees in the forest behind the house. Coming from Los Angeles (12 years ago) this is really amazing. The place has lots of rock and cement hardscape as well as 30 fruit trees, three rhubarb plants, who knows how much garlic, peonies galore and on and on and on. Year one I worked on the trees. This year I took on a lawn and put in a 400 gal koi pond. The rest of the lawn I'm filling in with camomile, native grass (3" no mow!) and various flowers I've divided or just plain old moved! (In January I made a committment to loose 50lbs. I'm not surprised I did it. Yeaaa)
Look forward to chatting. This is my first thread. And, I've looked at a lot of others. What a friendly, kind bunch I've seen so far. Look forward to meeting you. BTW, can someone tell me brugmansias are. I can't tell.
Also, the picture I'm sending shows a small piece of the lawn I tore out a small bed I put a grapevine in. Below that is a small view of the next level where you see a lonely plum, devestated by bears last year. Next is my GH then believe it or not are two more levels (that you cant see) For my first house (and I plan on being my last) I bit off a huge chunk. Can't wait til spring to see the fruits of my labors, both flowers and the edible kind.
Bye for now,
kokopelli

What a nice place to hang out!
Thanks for the welcome Whiterose. Santa Fe has definately begun to sprawl. We're about an hour from there in Montezuma. Population apx 300 maybe.
And very grateful!!!
Welcome, Kokopelli - I spent a lot of my growing up years across the state line in (southeastern) Colorado. I married a southern boy about 20 years ago, and the rest is history :)
Brugmansias are a tropical distant cousin to the tomato plants (same family, very different genus). They are more closely related to Datura. Both plants have many species that provide gorgeous, scented flowers - brugs are called "Angel's Trumpets" and their flowers hang downward; Daturas flowers project upwards, and are referred to as "Devil's Trumpets."
Both plants also have a negative side - some people try to smoke and/or ingest various parts of the plants for their hallucinogenic effects. Bad idea - every year some people die trying this out for fun :(
There's the short version of Brugs defined; if you want a more formal education, check out the Brugs forum where you'll learn anything and everything possible about them.
Glad to have you gardening with us!

Welcome from Florida you sound like such a wonderful person, you'll love it here at Dave's ... I DO!
Katrina
FINALLY!! A neighbor in New Mexico!! I believe that kokopelli is the first subscriber from that fair state.....and I love your name...I have a lot of kokopelli's around...and am giving a stuffed one to my DGS for Christmas. We have a wonderful gal by the name of farizona on here...so maybe the 3 of us can manage to meet up in Lordsburg sometime....she lives in Bowie, AZ. You are going to love Dave's Garden. Jo
Hi kokopelli. I have no idea what that means. Cathy is much easier. Welcome to Dave's, we have lots of fun here, get to do show and tell endlessly and all kinds of contests and other things. You've taken on quite a project. Congradulations on the weight loss, keep moving, that is the key. As a friend said of her overweight condition "I'm over fed and under moved". You have evidently reversed that. I live in the dry part of Oregon, forget what you hear on the weather, we have cactus here, only one kind but there they are out amongst the sagebrush.
Thanks for your warm welcome everyone. Whiterose, You may have heard of Montezuma Castle or Montezuma Hot Springs. Both are about a mile from me. I've been trying to post a pic of the castle but I only have one in bmp format. Cept I just remebered that there already is a pic on the internet. Here's a link. I like my picutre better because well I took it and its just before sunset and the sky has wispy pink clouds that really make it look magical. And, yes Montezuma is right outside of Las Vegas, NM. About 6 miles from town.
Jo, The house we lived in a few years ago was on Roadrunner Rd. We had a resident Roadrunner that liked to hang out in our back yard and drink out of our fish pond. That was my first water garden The one iris I divided then has been divided into many many many new plants since then. Don't know where Lordsburg is.
Thanks for explaining about brugs Terry, they sounded a lot like my trumpet vine. But, it's definately not a tropical or fragrant.
Kokopelli is a southwestern character that I just love. He has some pretty racy stuff said about him, te he. And, he is quite the figure when it comes to gardening. Here's a fun link to check him out at: www.tiikokopellispirit.org/Magazine/Legend.html
Thanks for the kudos Mary. I've been told our climate is a lot like eastern Oregon. Didn't believe it possible, knowing what portland can be like. And, then a lot of people ask me how I like desert weather. Which I think is silly cause, I wouldn't consider 6500+ elevation with blue spruce desert. O well.
Cathy or koko
take your pick
Go to the Brugmansia and Friends Forum - you'll be "hooked" in no time!!
Yes, Cathy, I do know that wonderful landmark, now that you mention it -- my brain needs frequent jogging, LOL. My DH and I drove down to Las Vegas on a couple of occasions when we lived in Santa Fe and it was such a gorgeous drive. Back then, the town had had no restoration done and they were just talking about working on the hotel, which I understand is now a real landmark in itself. Well...that is just a lovely area, and am so glad you are there to add to its beauty and charm!
Koko...Lordsburg is in NM...just at AZ line on I-10....and Bowie is just inside AZ. We have a lot of roadrunners too.....but I took the user name when I lived in Fla...since I loved to be on the go so much. I thought you meant Montezuma's Castle up near Sadona, AZ...the old cliff dwelling ruins. Also, I volumteer at Coronado National Memorial,,,and our 6500 mtn is called Montezuma Pass. I am High Desert too...in the valley but am at 4500 ft. Jo
Welcome to DG, Koko!
