Not a Brug question but!!

Could someone explain to me why it is not good for a pregnant woman to eat cheese? Is this something new? Kelly Rippa(sp) on Regis and Kelly wasn't allowed to eat cheese on the show this morning.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

If you find out let me know because that is my 6 month pregnant daughters favorite food.

OK here is an article about what are the bad pregnancy foods. I don't know how to do a hyperlink www.fitpregnancy.com go to the nutrition section. Then scroll down to the "Don't worry, be happy" article.

Cheese and pregnancy

Q: Hi there - just wondered if Roquefort and goats cheese are both safe to eat during pregnancy?

Glory there are tons of articles on it

Why can't you eat runny cheeses when you're pregnant?

In order to avoid the risk of listeriosis pregnant women are advised to avoid eating ripened soft cheeses of the Brie, Camembert and blue veined types, whether pasteurised or unpasteurised.
This is because ripened soft cheeses are less acidic and contain more moisture than hard cheeses and are therefore more inclined to allow growth of undesirable bacteria such as Listeria, which may harm your unborn child.

You can enjoy hard cheeses such as Cheddar and Cheshire. Cottage cheese, processed cheese and cheese spreads can all be safely eaten during pregnancy.

my first PG, there was a disease can't think of name, basically could leave a kid brain dead. til that time i ate raw meat, even hamburg. now i have to have meat well done. the name will come back to me, i guess you guys heard of it. i didn't hear of the cheese. didn't have to worry much though, didn't eat much when pregnant....
if i remember right, kelly didn't color her hair with her 1st pregnancy, doc was "iffy" about it..... my kids came out right well, just wonder if they would mind better if i had left my hair alone when pregnant......
hi mavie and kell, long time no see.

"They" Are saying not to even polish your nails because of the chemicals.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Gee, I wonder how so many of us survived when we and our mothers didn't have all these "rules"!! I've had some sort of color on my hair since I was 21(I was a beautician), ate everything in sight, smoked like a locomotive, and had 2 very healthy babies. True, my first one was small only 5 1/2 lbs but my second was 8 1/2lbs. My Mom's whole family was small, she only weighed about 2 lbs but was wirery and lived to be 89. I guess ignorance is bliss.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Well, when I get pregnant the next time and up until that time, I'm eating cheese, any kind of cheese. LOL!!

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

PS: I've worn fingernail polish every day of my life since about 13.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Way to go Shirl, hope you can eat cheese for a long...........time.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I hate cheese,so I'll never have a problem with that ....

I used nail polish, and colored my hair while I was pregers,my kids turned out fine.... till their teens......
Must have been the acetone nailpolish remover!

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

Appears women will soon have to climb in a bubble when pregnant.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Hibiscus, don't think it will be a problem.

LOL

Gosh, if I had to be pregnant again and then to have a baby again.........I would cry. I just do not get these post menopausal woman wanting to go into their dotage with a kid holding onto their knees. Visits are great but no moving in allowed.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

yeah, but when everything around you seems to be crashing, those little ones sure can make you forget all the other cr*p. Our little one is staying with us again, and somedays if it weren't for her, I would just sleep the day away. (won't mention the days when she's more than I can handle and I want to hide:)

PJ....I too smoked like a broken down stove when I was pregnant and ate like there was no tomorrow. How times have changed.

Thanks all for the info..now I know.

Thanks DR for the call....hows the house coming along?

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Thanks everyone for the input. She is safe. It's hard cheeses she likes. Would you believe she only weighed 85 lb. when she got pregnant and the Drs fussed, now she has gained 35 lbs and they say it is to much. I just wonder how they figure that when she was 35 lbs under weight to start with. Hmmmmm

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Jesh,I weighed 102 when I got pregnant, went up to a whopping 176 during the pregancy....
The doctors didn't say anything
Did it with the 2nd one too..

The first one ,the weight came off fast...
the second one took a year
But they still said nothing.....
If I got pregnant now Id be in deep trouble, huh
Guess those boxes of Hoho's wouldn't be a good thing ....

But ,as my boss says,I'm gutted,so no pregnancy for me!!!

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

DonnaB, please tell your DD that mom nature knows much better than those docs. i guess i have one of those faces, neither ob doc fussed at me about a thing.
the second one was a lovely man. after the section i wanted a coke, the nurses wanted me to drink juice....he went and bought me a coke.
he wrote orders for regular food from the first day, and told me if i needed a shot for pain and the nurses would not give it to me to have them call him at home. the hospital was nonsmoking, he told me just to go in the bathroom.

a woman is under enough stress being pregnant without being picked on for the little things.

Montgomery, AL(Zone 8a)

Ladies, just a thought from an old man. If OB doctors were women and in order to give advice, they had to have previously gone thru being pregnant at least twice, I bet
their advice would be different. It really is strange that most people my age should not be around, because our mothers broke most all the rules that doctors today set.

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

You're right Hummer_nut.

Thank goodness all of those women in the past didn't eat cheese when they were expecting. hank goodness none of them drank coffee. Thank goodness none of them drank Whisky, Gin, Vodka. Thank goodness none of .........

All of these modern do's and don'ts as a load of rubbish IMHO. My mother ate cheese, and smoked, I'm ok (I think), one of my aunts smoked like a chimney, ate everything which I read today should not be eaten, and she had 13!! very healthy children.

It's a load of HUMBUG.

so there... Hmmph

Thanks Kell we are very excited. This is her 3rd pregnancy and the only one to make it this far. She goes to the Dr. every 2 weeks and just had her 3rd sonogram. They said everything is fine and she should carry to term. We are all relaxing already and I have already purchased everything for it. Do you think he will be spoiled LOL!!!!!!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

WOW!!!! That is great news then Donna! You must all be so excited! You do not know yet if it is a boy or girl? I can tell you are going to be the best grandma! I will be keeping only the best thoughts for your daughter and grandbaby!

Donna,
You didn't tell me you were gonna ba a "Grandma".

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I am sorry Gloria. I could have sworn I told you last time I came over. I guess I was to excited about getting new brug cuttings. It's going to be a boy and he is due March 10. I think it is funny because when I first met Gloria we were talking about her kids and grand kids and I had said I didn't think I would ever get to be a grandma. I just hope she does carry to term. I am kind of worried because she is so tiny and small boned and short waisted. I hope being 25 now makes the difference as when she was 19 when she lost the others. The second one was at 5 months and she had to be hospitilized. She is complaining already and looks pretty big. I can't wait to see her at 9 months if she can make it that long. I took this pic about a month ago. She looks very pale and is anemic.

Donna Just say a little prayer every day. My DD lost one at 4 mos and it really tore her up for almost a year. She had Sarah that was 4 and looking forward to a little brother or sister. Then almost 2 years later, she had little Hannah. She was sick almost the whole time and developed Toxemia and Pre eclampsia in her 7th mo. She became very sick, and was hospitalized for a week, then they decided to do a C section 7 1/2 weeks early. The baby was fine, just small 3lb 4oz. We don't know why these things happen. Her Dr was a friend that she went to college with and the same thing happened to her just a few months earlier. She shouldn't have any more because of her heart, but all is well in every other way. Best wishes.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Donna, feed that pretty girl some steaks!! LOL I sure hope she talks to you after she finds out her bare tum was posted here............. LOL
