Anybody have grow lights?

Ellabell, GA(Zone 8a)

I didn't get around to getting a greenhouse this year. Not sure of the right spot, what kind, and the money issue. I regret not getting one now. I'm so bored!
Anyway, I have a shelf with fluorecent lights that has turned out to work really good for cuttings. Look at the cute little log cutting (thanks for the tip tiG). I have lots of those and they will grow out of the shelves before spring.
I have an extra room that I could turn in to a plant room, and have been checking out plant lights on the internet. It seems to me that I could use one 1000 watt Metal Halide (found one with extended red spectrum) that would pretty much take care of the whole room.

The questions are; If I put a humidifier in the room, will I get mold problems on the walls?
It says keep tops of plants 4 to 6 feet away from lamp. That would only give me 3 feet or so of growing space from the floor. Are they talking about directly under the light?
A friend of mine says that helicopters flying over the house can pick up signatures from the light and I will end up getting my door kicked in by the cops that will come to search for illegal plants. Any truth to that?

Oh my, what to do! Any tips would be appreciated.

well, I have a metal halide, it's not that strong, only 450, but I gotta tell you, I did expect something last year:) but I'm sure that if they come, I'll send them home smiling with an arm full of brugs!! Too many other things to worry about, and they are a legal light, so let them come:)
I have a big room, and have the MH in the center and grow lights all around the sides.

I have big lights too. They work great. I'm not sure I understand why you want to put a humidifier in the room?

I just figured that the airborne heating that I have would make the air too dry for plants. I'm thinking that if I close the went in the floor and put a humidifier in there it would be a friendlier plant environment since I'm not planning on growing cactus.

I also have a MH and grew my cuttings last year on my sunporch which is near my woodstove. Very dry heat and I didn't use a humidifier. They quickly overtook the sunporch and grew very big.
BTW I also had footprints on top of a snowbank in front of my house last year where someone climbed up to be able to see in my windows. As tig said, let them come. They'll be sorry as they will be leaving with an armload of Brugs.LOL

I've been using 1000 watt MH lights for a few years now. As long as you don't have your windows all covered over, and weird vents and you're stealing electricity, then you've got nothing to worry about. The brugs grow incredibly wonderful under the lights.

Brugcrazy, if you look at this again, could you tell me how close to the light your plants get without getting burned. I like to get one light to take care of the whole room, but if I can only use the first 2 to 3 feet from the floor it would be a waste.

We have a light cart to start seedlings and then fixtures with the gro bulbs in them in my mom's garage. I am hoping the police do come by sometime so we can give them a tour and explain what each little seedling is going to be when it grows up...it would be a lengthy tour and I'm sure they would not come back! :)

Most of my plants are huge, some only inches away from the light. I put the shorter ones underneath the light and the larger ones around it. It has an umbrella cover on it to reflect the light. The leaves will burn if they get 6" from the light. Hope this helps.

Paintedlady,
My son was a Drug cop for about 6 years before becoming a sergeant...the helicopters pick up the heat put off by these marijuana growing lights not the light. This equipment can also pick up a persons body heat.
