Banana seeds

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I have a few banana seeds to play with :) Can you all tell I've got tropics on my mind? How do I plant them?

I've never done bananas from seed,if they have a hard seed casing, you may need to scarify by using sand paper or a nail file, thats if they are hard like canna seeds I use a piece of sand paper, what do they look like?I'm sure you will get a pro along soon,to school us both, where did they come from, did you have some go to seed?

I bought these from PineTree Seeds... $1.25 for 3 seeds. I'm suppose to be getting a few more in a trade. The seeds are pretty big and they do have a hard seed coat. I'll try to get a picture of them.

Poppysue, I think they are Musa ensete / Ensete ventricosum. I've succesfully grown them twice from seed, it is very easy.

First nick and scratch the hard seedcoat, then put the seeds on a glass of water, and let them soak there for a day or two. Change the water if it becomes dirty. The viable seeds usually go to the bottom.

Plant 1,5-2,5 cm deep, keep moist and warm. Germinating takes from 3 weeks to 6 months, even more, but it's rare. Mine have always sprouted within 3 to 4 weeks from the sowing date.

Good luck with your 'nanas ;)

I've never got any other banana seeds to sprout, I've tried Musa rosea, Musa zebrina and M. velutina. They have small seeds, they just have never sprouted, don't know what's wrong. I will still try anyway.

Sue,I planted some banana seeds a few years ago,2 out of 5 sprouted, the pup I sent you was from those seedlings
I planted some seeds a month ago, still nothing......

CC - I never did tell you. The baby croaked. I was bummed about it too. I think it just was too cool and wet in the fall and it rotted. I probably should have kept it in the house from the start.

don't feel bad,I have so far killed the baby's eclipse and gts sent plus a baby like the one I sent you.I do have the sister pup to the one I sent you,I can send it now before I kill it or pray for the best and send it in the spring, plus I still have the 2 seedlings that are now large ones
