Butterfly for Id

San Francisco, CA

I am not sure if anyone wants to id this butterfly, it is very common, I think I should buy a book or something to check it out.

I was just about to say that's a Pained lady! But then I looked and realized that it is a West Coast Lady. Almost.

Yes'm. It's definitely a West Coast Lady. The spots on the rear of the wing give it away...

We have 4 species of Vanessa out here in California, and yep, that's a West Coast Lady (V. annabella). The other ones commonly seen are Painted Lady (V. cardui), Virginia Lady (V. virginiensis), and Red Admiral (V. atalanta).

For more info and links to images of all 4 species, try here: http://www.public.iastate.edu/~mariposa/species.html
