I have attached a picture of the nicest looking pollen...so neat in it's little bags. This pollen came to BGI from Mr and Mrs JT....the little bags were inside a padded envelope....super job Jt and Ann.
JT and Ann's pollen
Great looking pollen Glory. JT and Ann sure know their stuff. Hope someone will need it and get some great crosses using it.
tiG also sent some pollen so we do have a nice start. All donations appreciated!!!
what I sent on anthers wasn't that fluffy, hoped you were able to save a bit of it!
Glory do u cryogenticly preserve the pollen--you know other reproductive "stuff"--or dry ice etc.
DR,
The best I can do is home freezing....Brug pollen has been kept up to a year in the home freezer and is still viable.
I'm glad to see that it made it ok.If that was dry enough I can start some different kinds drying for the next shipment.
Wow! That is quite a bit of pollen. Very nice.
Glory - will my pollen be okay if it's just been refrigerated?
Kelley,
Believe me I'm no expert on pollen but this systems seems to work:
Pick the pollen...lay it on a paper plate and leave it out on the plate for a day or two....after it is dry just slip it into one of those little 2"x3" craft bags(from Walmart)....put into the freezer. I have had no problems with mildew doing the pollen this way.
JT,
I would appreciate it if you could tell all exactly how you collected your pollen and each step after that....this is a pollen bankers dream come true. When I opened up the little ziplock bag the pollen looked like it was just picked from the Brugs.
Poppy,
We really haven't decided how long pollen is viable in the fridge...any one want to answer that question?
Gosh Kell, if you have long tweezers, you wouldn't have to pick the flowers, just pull the anthers out. I'd hate to have to pick all my flowers (that I don't have right now) to get the pollen.
By the way, I'm seeing some great poinsettia pictures all over Daves. Are these all your own? Very pretty.
The sang blooms are so narrow and the hoop house is right in front anyway so I can't see them easily. I also have several hundred on it right now.
Thanks Brugie. One of my favorite things about Christmas is getting to see all the new poinsettia hybrids that come out each year. I just love them! I have them all over. This year I have been very bad and have bought 3 poinsetttia trees also.
I got the idea from Eyes, she has been putting in the cutest little christmas pics. I thought I would do my part in decorating Dave's for Christmas also! LOL
The one on your ll:58 post is the one I got my MIL this year. It really is a gorgeous plant.
Forgot to ask if you got the burgundy one too?

The one I got her was definitely a coral color with the cream color in the leaves too.
Kell,
I kill every poinsetttia I ever had...guess I think they are like Brugs and water them to death. Your are sooooo pretty. I'll just look at yours instead of being a poinsetttia killer. :)
I didn't do anything special to the pollen I collected. It was just easier to gather in bundles of anthers.I laid the anthers on a plastic baggie and that on top of a flat of PB seed I was starting.Moisture from the seed cups collected on the bottom of the plastic but the tops stayed dry. Each type pollen on a different baggie of course.I left everything this way for 5 days then packaged it in the little envelopes and mailed it.
NOW... that said,I would recommend doing this in the house since the humidity would be much less and drying time would be shorter.
JT,
Thanks...it sure was some pretty pollen.
LOL Brugie............. well I asked at work where I bought one for the desk and they also think it is more a salmon........... I still see pink..............
Glory, it is my experience that they hate the heat in a house. Here I keep them in for just a short while and rotate them outside. Lasts much longer. Do you like the new colors? Not very Christmasey but I love them!!
They're feautiful, Kell :) Two years in row I brought white flies into my house with poinsettias. I steer clear of them now ... now matter how pretty they are.
Poppy,
After fighting whitefly off and on for two years in my GH I finally brought out the big guns....Diazanon. I am now white fly free. I know most people don't like such a strong chemical but enough was enough. I can now get back to the growing of Brugs and not Whitefly. LOL
