Observation on wintering brugmansia at my house-

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

With a recent move came a house with HUGE windows and full Southern exposure. Perfect for wintering cuttings and small starts of brugs. This downstairs room stays about 68-70.

So start cuttings is what I did. The cuttings rooted VERY easy and continue to grow. With this growth, the brugs are reaching for the sun and leaves are lighter then normal (no bugs) They are growing for sure, but look stressed to me.
They require constant moisture and turning. Very high maint. wintering idea for what I thought would be the perfect setup for them.

You can imagine my surprise to find the cuttings that I stored in a COLD (about 58) bedroom with about 2 hours of sun ROOTED and look 100% better. The growth is a nice healthy green, leaves are coming out slowly, no reaching for the sun. The cuttings actually developed a stronger root system. Hard for me to believe since I start almost all my cuttings on heat mats and really give them LOTS of light. Is this something new or have I been clueless all along? If I new it was this easy all cuttings would be started like this. Who new?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Last year I wintered over some of my brugs in my sons bedroom, northern exposure, and no heat except for what would drift thru the doorway,I also watered them very rarely. Then I had some in my living room, southern exposure ,heat, and I watered them faithfully.

The ones in my sons room, that were ignored ,were the best looking, like you said healthy green leaves etc....
The ones in the living room did not look as good, the ones in the bed room also bloomed faster in the spring..

Don't ask me why.....

Maybe it's because it closer to the natural hebitat?? plus the time of year and all??

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I had the same experience last winter. Trying to ignore my cuttings for now.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Mine in the basement I have plastic bags over the pots are now starting to put new growth on. I have only watered them once. The ones throughout the house are getting new leaves and dropping them almost as quick. Maybe I will just close the blinds and see what happens. Cuttings - I have lost quit a few this year, some I was really bummed out about.

My mandevilla vine I had trouble with bugs, thought I had killed it, have it in the basement did the same as the brugs and just this morning I see what looks like some new growth on it.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

That is true love Deb.......... willing to live in the dark along with your brugs!!

(Zone 7b)

Deb, which cuttings did you lose? Maybe some of us will have extras to set aside for you that we can send in the spring when the weather warms up enough for shipping?

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Maybe that is due the resting period that they getting and the other are not getting. Hmmmmm
