This afternoon, I went to my little Gh to take take some cuttings out of the rooting mixture and pot them up. I noticed that several were pretty wilted, just thought I had let them get too dry. After I potted them up, I took the babies out to my new temp GH, where I discovered that some things really looked awful, only a couple of days ago they were fine. I still just thought they were too dry, so I watered them. Then I looked at a big Maple leaf Begonia I had, it looked like hot water had been poured on it! I then discovered that my heater obviosly had been off on a couple of these cold nights so things were damaged. Luckily my DH was here and found that the circuit breaker had been thrown, probably since the big rain we had last Wed pm. The coldest night of the year so far. Got to get an alarm.
I hadn't noticed it before, because the heater usually only runs at night anyway.
It really makes me mad tho, everything was so green and healthy, full of leaves and buds., Oh well - I guess now I will just have naked brugs & nanner trees!
Horrible discovery!
Sure hope they come back out ok. Seems it is always something, bugs, dry, too hot, too cold.
oh girl!!! and it's been cold. Hope everything makes it!!!! you know where to get more. :)
I don't think they got really frozen, just really nipped! It did dip to the 20's, but maybe not for too long. The stems look ok so far.
I know exactly how you feel, maybe we should shop for alarms together!
OH PJ, I'm so sorry to hear what has happened. I don't have a lot, but I sure can share what I have if your brugs don't make it.
Thanks guys, I will let you know.
What a shame - but hopefully you caught it before any permanent damage was done.
Their pretty tuff plants PJ but if they don't come back I'm sure between all of us we can replace them.
PJ - did you have any pods on that lot?
Yep, there are a few pods, but most of them have questionable daddys! No big loss to the Burg world, but I was thrilled, because these were the first pods I ever had. I probably won't know for a few more days if I have lost them.
Well then I'm crossing my fingers and toes for you. Good luck - please keep us posted.
For another time, is there a way you can run a small light on that same circuit the heater is on? A little night light would alert you to the breaker not functioning, especially at night.
I find it very comforting to see my little light on down there in mine at night. ( also cheaper than an alarm system if cash flow is an issue).
Great Idea RA49, will check with my DH.
Oh Azalea I hope you don't lose any of the brugs. That has to be really upsetting to think you had them all snug as a bug in a rug only to have this happen. The light idea is a good one as I don't check mine when I get in from work in the middle of the night. The yard is just to wet to be tromping around in that time of night, but I could see a light in my GH from the living room window.
PJ,
Never fear we are here!!! Let me know if you need any replacements.
