Is RV a selected, vegi propagated clone from a nice specimen, or is it the name given to all sanguinea x vulcanicola seedlings? Just wondering if there are different strains of RV, making it possible for a cross pollination.
Also, in the Preissel book, there was mention of pink, red, yellow and multicoloured forms of vulcanicola, I'm curious to know if any of these are available or at least in collections. The Priessel book mentioned they had many and plan to get the seeds out to keep this rare plant from loss through horticulture. I need on this waiting list!

Roter Vulkan question
I do not know. I have one that is labeled as pink but the buds just fell off so I may never know............... (big sadness here)that I got from a nursery 2 hours from here that was labeled pink. I also have one that looks alot different that I got from Kartuz but that one has never had buds yet.
Strybing arboretum in San Francisco had Vulcanicola a few years back in their brugmansia bed outdoors in the arboretum. They sent me cuttings but they never rooted and died.:-(
RV is a selected, vergi propagated clone.
Not much people have RV because it is very slow growing and very sensitive.
Please donīt believe each word from preisselbook......
Shure he has made much vulcanicolacrossings, but where are they........?
I never have seen them. May be they are at his steril greenhouse.
It is said that most vulcanicolacrossings will not grow in other places. Only at Preisseels......
Greetings Ludger
LOL!!!!
That's hilarious Ludger! I have heard that Strybing has a plant, often with pods, but then on another list someone who actually works there and has access to the plants, said he is looking for one. I emailed him and said I'd trade anything for seeds....if the plant is still there.
I was thinking of doing a road trip down to beg for seeds, but it would help if 1. they have the plant 2. if someone working there could help! Quite the drive!
I don't know why they are so difficult for most people to grow, maybe including they need cool like the sanguineas, which many people don't have. And they grow high up where there is very little soil on degraded volcanic rocks, which has very little nutrients, and I am sure this drains very quick, but keeps moist because one book (One River by Wade Davis) suggested they were a cloud forest species, like many bromeliads and orchids, like epiphytes.
One week ago I planted some RV cuttings in soil, and some in water, and the soil are nearly mush and the water, in one week nearly have roots. Very shallow water.
Liz told me of your interest Dennis, but do you know where the vulcanicola is? there are over 50 acres of gardens so it would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack if I went to look for you.
NOOOOOOO!!! I had no idea it was so big. I'll keep digging Kell, maybe there is an internet map of plants. If I go down I'll have to sneak my tent and dog in for a couple nights!
I had asked Mike Kartuz if he had seeds and he didn't but said he thought they had one. I'll ask this fellow who works there if he can find out. Sure would be cool to have seeds from a hardy specimen. Hopefully there are two seperate clones pollinating, and not a cross. Thanks.
I would suppose an educated person could make an educated guess as to where one may be growing. LOL
In the Chilean garden they have brugs
"19. Chile
A magnificent mayten tree is the centerpiece of the Chilean garden. Note the hot colors of Peruvian lilies, red bells of Chilean bellflower, fragrant angel's trumpets, and Winter's bark, a sacred tree used in healing ceremonies."
Though I am not sure a vulcanicola would be there also. I have not been there for quite awhile. If I can,I may go over in the next couple of weeks and have a hunt!

PS Dennis.....if you find out which garden it is in........I will wear a coat with big pockets..........LOL
You rock Kell. I'm still waiting for a response from someone who works there, he'll know. Maybe, just maybe I can keep you from being arrested.
Miss Lizzy, do you think I should wear my bikini and blonde wig??
Now Kell, if we were blondes we would just get excused and could walk right out of that garden with visible, meter long vulcanicola cuttings under our arms.
Too easy, girl!
Lets meet in coats with deep pockets. Personally I have a short smoking jacket for the occation and I want to change the pockets to make them so deep, that they hang after me on the ground, when we walk out of there. That would be a real challenge and I think we could make it. :)
