While I was working out of town last fall, my brugs were in blooming in their full glory. After finding out the basics to pollinate them my DH decided to give it a try because he wanted seeds. He used only one long stemmed Q-tip and just went from plant to plant to plant. He didn't care about what was pollinated with what - he just wanted seeds. Now I have about a dozen seed pods. Which parent determines the shape of the seed pod? I've been calling them "Brug Ho's" - I hope I can use this term in jest and that it doesn't offend anyone. If it does, please accept my sincere apology ahead of time and I will edit my post. I do hope someone can answer my question and let me know which parent has the dominance over seed pod shape though. Thanks in advance, Carol
Seed Pod Question
LOL - Great name Carol!!
I wish I knew Carol, I would tell you. I think it is the mother. I know on mine on 1 plant, even if different dads, they have the same shape.
so does that make Adam a pimp?? hehehe
It sure wasnt just Adam and Eve. ♫ ♫
I must say I was quite surprised myself when I saw the pods. I am still fairly new to brugs myself and wasn't ready to even try pollinating yet. When Adam proudly told me he was the culprit, I figured it must have been some kind of freudian thing since I had been working out of town for a long period of time. Especially since Adam said this spring, "If you can't eat it - why even grow it". Now he has turned into a big brug fan himself. I am just hoping there is a way I can narrow down the possibilities by seed pod shape.
You might be able to narrow down the possibilities based on the leafs a bit a few weeks after they germinate, based on flower and seedpod of the resulting hybrid later on. All those things can help you determine what the possible father was depending on how many Brugs you had blooming at the time and how many of each type. With hybrids between multihybrids though this can get a bit tricky. If you only had 2 types of Brugs this would be so much easier.
LOLOL!!!! Carol!!! Husbands you gotta love em!!!
I've been wondering if I might rent your DH for a while so he could be a good model for mine to take after. Jim could care less about my brugs. Of course he talks about them when company comes. Did the same thing with all the Christmas decorations I used to put up by myself.
Shirley, they are coming here in January, I hope Adam is ready to teach Johnnie!!!
I doubt I ever get Jim to change his mind. Just not a priority with him. When Kyle comes to visit, he just leaves. I don't blame him, he doesn't know how to talk flowers.
I am really lucky, Johnnie is a great guy, he's the one that turned me onto gardening. he doesn't get the bringing 500 in the house bit :) but he let me, even carted them in.
Jim can't help with any kind of physical activity anymore with his lung problems. He can still change the oil and blades on the mower and I guess I can handle the rest, so far anyway. I keep asking when I get to retire, but most of my work is self inflicted. Just couldn't give up the brugs.
then give him a big hug for talking about them to company:)
Yes, at least he does recognize that they are a lot of work, as are the rest of the flowers and veggie garden. Jim would never tell me I can't do something and is very generous, so I can't fault him too much.
Carol you are such a hoot, thanks for the laugh. I am sorry I can't offer any advice but just wanted to let you know that I enjoyed your above statement.
