After getting one too many $150 water bills and losing my lawn during drought/water restrictions, I have decided the St. Augustine lawn in the front yard must go. I'm looking to replace it with an evergreen ground cover for zone 9b. Has to take full, hot sun and thrive in sand without lots of water, fertilizer, and other fuss. Perennial peanut Arachis glabrata var. eco-turf was suggested: http://www.greenbeam.com/features/plant070599.stm
I wanted native plants if possible. I'm currently trying Mimosa strigillosa (Sentitive plant) http://home.steuber.com/sarah/flwrs/Htmls/Mimosa_strigillosa_.html. It's doing nicely, but it goes dormant. Beach sunflower (Helianthus debilis) http://www.floridata.com/ref/h/heli_deb.cfm gets too tall.
Anyone else got any other ideas?
