Almost a disater!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I went to sleep last nite around 7:00,Chuck came home and woke me up at 1:20 am to tell me the power was out and my alarm would not be going off(I didn't have to get up till 2am)
Since I didn't have an alarm I decieded to just stay up,as I'm laying there feeling sorry for myself for missing 40 minutes of sleep....it comes to me

NO POWER means NO FURNACE which means no heat in the greenhouse!!!!!!!

I go tearing down there and checked the temerature

37 degrees

Outside it was 6 degrees

I dragged the kerosene heater out there and got it going
The lowest it went was 33 degrees

It went to -1 outside

plus lake effect snow on it( maybe that insulated it,but it could have collapsed it)

I'm thinking I'm gunna take a cutting of EVERY Brug I have and keep them in the house......

Just incase

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

oh hon, take care. mine are in the house and not doing wonderfully :(

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

I don't have THAT much fun with a GH, so all of mine are growing, or going dormant in the basement. Sure nice to be able to sleep in and not have to keep a GH warm on cold nights!

Dripping Springs, TX

-1--!!!!! What does that feel like? I can't imagine how you ran around to get everything done. Hope you had your Long Johns on--- in double layers! My husband was wearing shorts yesterday...lol

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Just my pjs...actually one of my sons old t shirts and slippers, and YES ,it was cold, suppose to get colder tonite

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

CC, I bought a small gas heater last year that runs on a small gas grill tank and doesn't need electric for emergencies. Only problem is it throws off so much heat out the top that I have to have something over it or it will melt the plastic on the GH roof.I also bought an alarm system that warns if the temps get too hot or too cold but I haven't been able to get it to work right since I bought it.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Good save CC - the GH would have been the first thing I thougth of - then praying there wasn't a power surge when it came back on.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

CC, i would have loved to see you flying around. i still have a few brugs i had put under my oaks right out back that have no leaf damage yet. i did move brugs with seed pods inside for a false alarm last weekend. waiting to see how they do. crossing fingers, i swear creamsickle pods are growing still, and a couple of blooms opening up.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

CC, what a horrible thing to happen. I'm so glad Chuck woke you. Imagine what would have happened if you had not thought of the greenhouse and went to work. Hope everything is okay.

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Brrrrrrr colder then 1 tonight. I think some of it sled down here. Chin up everything will go fine if you dont catch cold ♫

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Hope cold dont do much damange on them! Bring it all over here and I would be happy to baby sitter for you until winter is over? LOL.. Mine still under green house.. I am wearing short and barefoot! Been raining all day. It have been raining over 6 inches today. Flooding everywhere!

CC, I'm so glad you saved all your brugs.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Thanks you guys,I'm taking cuttings this weekend
OF EVERTHING!

I'd like to find some kind of alarm so I know when the temperature drops, but if I'm not home ,then the alarm is useless

Wonder if there is some kind of small emergency heater that uses NO electricity

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

C.C. to the rescue! Hope your Brugs will be okay!!! Please be very careful with heaters, especially kerosene......may cause fires.

We are suppose to be hit with a snowstorm tomorrow. Hope it doesn't head up your way! Stay WARM! It's gonna be a looong winter!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

cuttings are a great idea! better to be safe than sorry.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

CC, How is it out there now? Has the storm passed?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Its cold and has snowed EVERY day!
Tomorrow is suppose to go to 41 ,then its suppose to get cold again,28 as a high on Sunday

CC,
Use high grade (low sulfur) kerosene to avoid sulfur dioxide damage.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

We use K1 clear...is that low sulfer?

cc
Only a high quality, 1-K kerosene with less than 0.4 percent sulfur by weight should be used. This is according to David S. Ross
