I found some daffodil bulbs at Sams Club for 2.81 a pkg of 50, so bought 3 pkgs, not thinking that the ground might be frozen! Figured by the house it would still be soft! Wrong!
I have pots and dirt in the house. Can I plant them this way and then put them outside in the pots? (like gallon type black soft pots?) Or must they be IN the ground itself to be able to bloom in the spring?
planting daffodils now?
I think they will bloom that way. I have even potted them and grown them in a sunny window, although I had small blooms that way. In the spring when they finish blooming, you will want to stir in some bulb food to compensate for the late planting. I have often grown lilies in large pots, with good results. A bulb with good soil and light and ample water won't know if it's surrounded by a gallon of soil or an acre.
Pot them up,but put them in a spot you can mulch heavy, you don't want the pots to freeze, only to get cold treatment,if you have an unheated garage that would work too.....
Ok, I've potted some of them so far, if I put them in the garage will I have to water them while they are dormant?
At times ,give them a good soak now and check them every couple of weeks
It should be moist, but not soaking, you don't want them to rot
O.K. Will do, Thanks so very much! Doris =^..^=
Southern Living did a feature recently on using daffs in container plantings. Being a bit colder where you are, you might place them in a cool spot (crawlspace, unheated garage, etc.) until closer to late winter, then bring them out to encourage them to grow.
BTW, you got quite a bargain. I bought the bulbs when Sam's first put them out - $13/box (which was still a nice discount off Scheeper's or Bloomingbulb's prices for the same varieties, and I got EXACTLY what I wanted.) When they marked them down to $5-something/box, I picked up three more (hyacinths, scillas and paperwhites, etc.)
I noticed someone is selling these daffs and tulips on eBay for $9.95 (opening bid)/box; $27.95 to buy them outright. Wish I had been smart/brave enough to buy them at $5/box and try my hand at selling them!!!
I've been tempted to go back to see if theres any left! But I did get these 2 weeks ago, so probably with all the Christmas stuff.......... I don't know why when I see these things I don't load up! (Can always use for trading!!!)
Our Home Depot has a gob of bulbs at 50% off. Lots of varieties, too. I'm having trouble wanting to buy a bunch as we'll be moving this year, though. I'm SOOOOO tempted to buy more than the 250+ bulbs I bought a week or so ago. :) Of course, then you have to plant them all. :)
the problem with being late planting bulbs is they deteriorate very fast be cause they have been drying out. When they are in the ground roots start to develope in September and then stop as the weather gets cold. This means the bulbs can get away fast when spring arrives. The chance of getting quality blooms goes down as the bulbs dry out.
Oh dear! Can I pot them and keep them indoors for a month or so, then put them in an unheated place?
the heat will force up leaves without roots to support them which will end up with a poor plant.
do you have any frost or snow yet? if you dont have any for about 4 weeks I would plant them in the ground so some roots can grow. If you have I would pot them up and keep them somewhere cool but not cold or frozen so roots can growth but it's cold enough to prevent leaf growth.
We've had snow and frost, but this week it was in the 40s. Today 35, but not all the ground is frozen completely. My garage is under the bedroom, its not really heated, but the furnace pipe runs across the garage ceiling and its not covered with any insulation, so the garage is maybe 10 or 15 degrees warmer than outdoors. I may be able to plant some outdoors close to the house foundation where the ground is still fairly soft, well muddy, but I could try that if you think it might work and then pot up some of the others and keep in garage.
Does this apply to allium moly and siberian squill as well? I have them in a box in my garage because the ground froze and have been wondering the same thing!
As long as the bulbs are firm, there should be no problem.
So if I leave them in the box and put them out as soon as the ground thaws, that should work OK? (regarding my siberian squill and allium moly)
sqill flower in the early spring and they will probably try and grow while in your box. you will need to look out for mold attacking the bulbs
