The beauty of a NW Florida garden

Milton, FL(Zone 8a)

There is no place quite like a NW Florida garden on the last day of November. This is Pete's seedling that I got at the Gulf Coast swap last spring. It's backed up by a Raja Puri banana from Arlene.BTW...Pete's seedling did not bloom this year.It gets another chance next spring.I sometimes envy you people that get snow to cover up the mess until springtime.

Wow, JT that banana did some growing. i have 4 of those with banana stalks on them, i think they are turning to mush. you'll have a nice stand of those next year.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Oh my ~~ that is sad looking isn't it.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

It is very sad
But it could be worse
There could be a foot of snow on it.....

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Yes, and two inches of ice under the snow. LOL

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

JT, if you lived up here in snow country, you would have had everything cut off, dug up, and in the house two months ago. Very short season here. You are lucky to be where you are.

JT,
I thought mine looked bad....just think before you know it they will all be back.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

You're up late Glory. Can't sleep? I thought I was the only one prowling the late night daves halls.

Dripping Springs, TX

Geez! What a sight!--now you know why I run around like an idiot before a freeze & put row covers over everything. Gone2seed do you want me to send you some?

I'm prowling as well but soon will be off to bed.

Liz,
It's only 11:48 here..I'm on Central time but I am getting ready to hit the hay soon...that's if Ron isn't snoring. LOL

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Central time? What are you doing on central time? I've got 9:48 as far west time as you can get without falling in the water time. You're not in the balmy southeast?
I miss a day at daves and have no idea what's happening.

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

JT..... looks like that will not bloom next year or any other year I might be wrong but is just a little dead looking to me....lol

Sad looking! My Still up and had some frost burn on it..

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Oh !! That is just so sas looking. I know our killer frost is
going to hit soon.

Milton, FL(Zone 8a)

No Pete.It has now been cut back and will come up from the roots along about April.I have heavy hay mulch over all the outside "stumps" to protect them from the cold.

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Thats what I figured JT,glade I don't get a killing freeze here

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

JT, mine did that gradually, but now they are gone. Each night they got a little more frost and looked a little worse each day. Still tried to open blooms with frostbitten leaves. Have about 150-200 wilted with cold blooms hanging on the Dr. right now. It is very sad looking. Couldn't stand to cut it down with it still blooming. Did cut some but just couldn't do it all.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

I still envey you southerners who can cut them back and they grow back in the spring. I woke up to 1 degree this morning and 4 in. of new snow.I was hoping for a mild winter like we had last year but that's not going to happen I'm afraid. :(

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Terry, that doesn't sound good. We still have no snow, but the cold is here. I think it is running close to ten degrees at night. Hope the weather straightens up for you so you can have the sun to heat the greenhouse during the days. Right now, I'm glad that I don't heat the greenhouse during the cold winter months.

Snow and Shirley,
I still think y'all should come on down here in the winter and become one of our "Snowbrids". We get a lot of retired folks here for the winter then they go back up north in late spring before it gets to hot here.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Shirley, I was so hoping for a mild winter like last year since this is the first time of keeping the GH open all winter. So far we are below average temps for this time of the yr. It figures. :(

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Glory, I'd love it, but who would take care of my brugs while I was gone? I'd hate to have to start over every year and living in the country, it would be hard to find a plant sitter who could run out through the snowy weather and take care of my plants. Darn it, good idea if it would work.

Snow, I've wondered how hard this would be for you to maintain during the winter. Wish it would turn around and be warmer for you. Those heat bills would be something I wouldn't want to see. I know how I feel when I have to pay to have the propane tank filled.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Glory, DH and I have talked about how we would love to go south in the winter but he is still working and carries the insurance so I'm afraid we will have to wait till he retires which is a long time away.I'll just keep dreaming of sitting in shorts and sipping ice tea in Dec. :)

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Pam, it is sad, isn't it? i had blooms everywhere.... now i have a couple....

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Arlene,
Still, today, had 2 or 3 trying to open and did open some but the poor plant is pitiful. I think I can finish cutting it now. Have you ever not cut one and had new growth appear on the old stalks, even partway down the stalk?

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Pam, i did this post winter, one in a large pot that was kind of protected, but the stalks were less than 2 feet, had been cut back. you could cut a couple of stalks off and put them in water, he roots really easily, would be easy to protect. i have some brugs, knock on wood, under my oak trees that have not had a leaf damaged yet. i've dug up some that were damaged, cut back the roots and put them in pots. if we get a hard freeze i'll lay them on their sides and cover them good, under the oaks.
the ones planted this year with watersorb really came up pretty easily except butterfly, that hole was maybe a little too good and it was right next to a 5 foot rose bush....
i'd sure give something a try! even a cutting that you keep inside by a window should be large and bloom for you early.

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Oh, I've got a bunch of short 2-4 ft pieces in water. Already got some nubbies. This plant is just so huge, I wondered if I put hay around it up to 3-4 ft if maybe it would not freeze the stalks(cut back of course) and come out quicker and bushier next year. My confederate rose does that. It is so huge and big trunks that it doesn't freeze all the way to the ground, just partway down. I just prune it every spring where new growth isn't coming out. Was hoping maybe the brug would do this too. I think the reason it took this one 3 or 4 frosty morns to go down totally, is that it is in front of a building and partially covered by a small white oak tree (mostly to one side). But actually all my in ground brugs went gradually, top leaves, then further down the next time, etc.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

JT, my 8' banana is frozen, brittle and cracks with the wind. I still can't bear to cut it down. Plus it's too cold to get out there. My yard is horrid, all the frozen everything. I need 2 good days of 70° to get it cleaned up!!!

Spring Hill, FL(Zone 9a)

Hay would work. Pine straw is even better because it insulates superbly but still lets the protected plants breathe and if you have as much of it around as I do its CHEAP! also easy to remove in spring or leave it as mulch.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

nope. oak leaves yes. Pine straw, no.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

tiG, all we have around here is oak leaves and I hate them. They don't decay away like maple leaves and are such a mess to clean up in the spring. I wondered if they would be a little acidic also. Don't know a thing about them other than the mess they create.

Milton, FL(Zone 8a)

Tig,don't cut it down.just trim up the leaves to clean things up.It should put up pups next spring. If not there is always the spring swap.
Brugie till those oak leaves into your garden.Majic!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I sure will till them into the flower beds next spring if they are okay for them. Right now, I'm not sure the tiller would go through the soil. Think it might be frozen and it is soooooo dry here. I'm sure there will be lots of broken water lines unless we get some snow cover.
