I've only recently become interested in Brugmansias after having grown jasmines. However, the few specimens that I have acquired were less than I hoped for. I got two from a local nursery tagged only as 'White' and 'Yellow' and they both turned out this cream with pinky-peach edges. I tried mail-order and the "Pink" came out the same. And although Brugs are renowned for there fragrance, mine are only fragrant in the evening, and faintly at that. I'm determined to find a variety (cultivar) that is extremely fragrant from a more reliable source. I do treasure the sheer beauty of the brugs I have now, but what's my best choice of named varieties to find that elusive fragrance, and where?
Disappointed with present Brugmansia sources
Where are you from? Can you put that under you name? Is it USA?
If you are in the US, this is a good place to find brugs. Do you have plants to trade?
I am located in New England (RI). I have to take my tropicals indoors before frost, so my brugs are inside now. I have the one unlabeled variety in the photo and one labeled only as "Orange Angel's Trumpet" which hasn't bloomed for me yet. I did heavily prune the one in the photo since it began to reach my ceiling indoors. I was amazed at how easily the shoots rooted with hardly any effort at all. I'm used to rooting rose cuttings and compared to those, the brugs are a breeze! I am particularly looking for a very fragrant white Brugmansia and perhaps a yellow that's very fragrant. Since winter is upon this area already I'm not sure cuttings would travel well and survive, but I'm sure you all know best. Thanks
Welcome to dave's SabraKhan.... I know were you are? I use to live in Taunton Ma not far from you
Pete
If you have grow lights, or just plain shop lights with fluorescent bulbs, you can grow the cuttings indoors during the winter and spring, and they will be ready for outside next May.
Owen
Welcome! I'm in Ohio, so same as you, they have to come inside overwinter. Next spring I should have lots of cuttings for you. Have dbl. white, dbl. peach, dbl. orange, etc., etc.
Welcome to Daves, and its good to see someone someone else from the northeast!
We will all have cuttings in the spring. If you want some seeds to start some on your own over the winter let me know and I'll send you some.......
SabraKhan- I used to live in a town in the South Shore area of MA--My husband and I used to drive to Logees in Danielson CT. You may want to try there.
I almost married a man from Cumberland, RI, oh so many years ago!!
Welcome SabraKhan! The nicest thing about Dave's is how everyone here will share with one another. I am sure you will have great ones in no time. I soon should have a lot of extra rooted ones soon!
Welcome SabraKhan. I have a unnamed white I call monster brug. It is very sweet smelling like a rose, grow very large and puts on tons of blooms. I also have Dr. Suess I haven't cut yet. If you want cuttings let me know quick and I will ship them to you for postage. You may mail e-mail me through this forum.
You know I forgot about Cala's store. She is one of the nicest members here on Dave's and from all accounts a very generous one. I have heard from many others that she has great brugs and you can buy them on her online store at much better prices than other sources!
take a look, unlike most of the outside sources I have bought from and was very disappointed, I bet she would never disappoint a customer!

SK, welcome to Daves. Yes, this is a great place and most of us are more than welcome to share. Timing is the main thing. I can share in the early fall due to the climate in Iowa. Possibly in the spring if I have extra things. For sure, I can help you out next fall if you don't already have 30 different kinds from generous DG people.
SK,
Welcome to Daves...I'm quite sure you will enjoy being here.
A warm welcome to you. Becoming a member of Dave's is one of the best things that you can do. There is not a better bunch of people anywhere. I have been taking cuttings this week. Please email me if you would like some.

Welcome - you'll like it here. Everybody is so nice and helpful. Don't worry about asking any dumb questions - I've already asked them.
Heck even I know people from Rhode Island and I'm in western Canada.
Welcome to Daves Garden. As I live in the frozen tundra I've already cut back and shared long ago but will have lots next fall.
Hi SK, you will love it here and you won't meet a nicer bunch of people. I ask lots of questions, and always get great answers.
I think this sharing of questions and replayings is it.
Everyone is giving all news and informations to all here.
Snow: Each time I read your word: " frozen Tundra " I must laugh....lol .
Germans sometimes " send " bad people in Tundra ( just in thoughts).
I wish you much brugflowers next summer.
GL
Is that what happen to us Snow?
It must be CC.We're here aren't we? LOL
Ludger - I live in a country where the whole top half is frozen tundra. LOL -
Welcome Sabra, you have definately come to the right place for a brugmansia lover....
Try Cala's store, she has a great variety.
Brugnanny-Do you think it's warm enough to send cuttings up north? The only reason I'm asking is that I received some from Callalily & they were ice cold and some were alittle mushy. (Susie, don't take it to heart) I'm hoping the ones Glory sent me will be ok-- because she's more south.
DR, I received cuttings all last winter with temps ranging from -5 to 20 degrees and never lost a one due to careful packing. If you are sending to a cold area the best thing to do is wrap them in newspaper and then bubble wrap. They should travel fine that way. In the winter I always ask the person sending to me to let me know when they mail the cuttings out so I can be sure to be home on the day they should arrive when the mailman comes so they won't be sitting all day in a freezing mail box.
DR, in the states, it is usually how the mail is delivered once it is in your town. i have a PO box so they aren't in the weather. in the south i know people who don't trade at all in the summer because their mailmain drives a vehicle without air conditioning and they sit in the heat all day and turn to mush. the only other thing i ever heard was if someone is not home and a package sits in the weather all day. i send cuttings and plants all year, no one has ever told me their plants/cuttings froze.
That is good to know I have one going out tomarrow and I was just a little scared to put it in the mail. Our little one horse town isn't very good at taking care of things, so I am going to drive up to one of the bigger offices.
Arlene and SnowHermit--I went to my tiny Po and gave them my phone number to call me for packages so they don't sit anywhere too long. Tlynn My PO is the same way--You probably have contract workers delivering your mail too. One bubble envelope I received had the end torn open and one cutting was missing & another box looked like it had been sat on.
DR, did you pick up cuttings from the PO and they were mushy? my PO is small too, one red light town, and i cringe to see the delivery people throwing packages around on the asphalt.
