Ok to everybody in deep south how cold did you get last night? Any damage on your "babies"
DEEP FREEZE?
DR, it isn't just how cold but for how long. it was 32 and some under for 5-6 hours last night, some leaf damage. the plants under my oak canopy are all just fine, actually look pretty compared to the ones in the open that are pretty much leaf less now, west of the house. there is some oak/scrub windbreak to the north and the west also. i still have some impatiens blooming in places too. cuttings in case are always a must.
DR,
Don't know how long it was freezing here but all the tops of my big Brugs were burned. I have a stalk of bananas on one of my trees..not sure if they got zapped or not...time will tell.
Monster brug was covered with frost and has noooooooo damage. She takes a licking and keeps on ticking. LOL. Dr Suess is ok also but it is under the shelter of a tree and close to the porch. I cut everything else back wednesday night from 3 to 6 a.m after I got all the turkey things done.. Brrrrrrr it was cold and I had to make lots of hot chocolate breaks
Donna, you sound like me! i was out cutting in the dark, i have some 8 foot cuttings in the house! busy busy busy today!
Here no freeze last night.. It is so warm and humid right now..
Damage to all of mine here on the coast of NC. Did cuttings, but have no idea if they will root or not. Leaves wilted, but only got down to 29, so cuttings should be OK, Right? Or not?
gee Donna, you monster brugs sounds too good to be true!!
If they are not mushy but firm, I bet they do great Agapanthus! If not post and I am sure we will all help you out!
She really is an awesome brug. I anyone wants cutting of her for postage e-mail me. I have plenty and it won't be long before she will get zapped a good one that will put her to rest untill spring.
DonnaB, You have email.
Thanks Kell, appreciate it. I'm still not sure what mushy is...the cut at the top you can kinda press in like you do testing a melon, but the stalk itself seems to be hard as a rock. Is that enough of a description?
!well anything that looks or feels like it may be rotting I would cut off. You can root 1 inch (or smaller) of a piece of brug, so I would not worry about size. The trick as far as I am concerned is not to water it till absolutely necessary after you pot it up in wet dirt.
Also, if the top starts to rot, just clip it off and do so way below the rot so it does not spread. I also touch the top then with rooting hormone just to discourage fungus.
Let us know how you do!
Ah, I knew I could count on you! I was thinking I should cut some off and you confirmed it. Rooting hormome is a good idea too. Again, and thanks....especially since a couple of these cuttings are going to Catlady. Right now they're in water on top of frig. I seem to have more luck rooting this way. Will update.
