Neat plant! Any idea if it's available in the States?

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

I live in California and I have seen it in Target nursery. I would expect it to be available in Florida.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Have you ever tried to grow them from seed? I have tried the last 2 years I get them to germinate just fine but then they don't do anything they will get a few inches tall and then all at once they die I was hoping maybe you could tell what I am doing wrong.

Dripping Springs, TX

I heard not to use compost or anything that is very organic in structure. George what is yours growing in?

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

Currently growing in a amongst a groundcover (Erigeron karvinskianus) in rather poor soil (some kind of crummy rocky fill left by previous owner. It is in full sun and a rather windy location. It has been in only a few months and seems to be holding it's own. I did put a compost mulch around it.
http://www.anbg.gov.au/anigozanthos/ states "In general kangaroo paws grow best in well-drained soils in a sunny position. Well-composted organic matter will improve growth."
More native info at http://farrer.riv.csu.edu.au/ASGAP/a-flav.html .
Another source points out it should be kept dry during domancy which occurs after flowering. My philosophy is to put it in the ground - If it grows fine, if not it goes on a different list. So far so good.
