Have an ugly chain link fence/would like to cover it with something beautiful. Behind it on the East is neighbors garage but half the day it gets afternoon sun. Any ideas
of easy to grow annuals or perennials for this area?
Could even wire up something to extend the height for something that wants to climb higher than 5 feet.
Thank You
Arlene
Need ideas for Half Sun/Half Shade Climbers & Vines
Hi Arlene,
Just some suggestions: Sweet Autumn Clematis or other clematis and they would come back year after year. For annuals around here I use passiflora, morning glories, air potato vines, and mandevillas. This year I had a snail vine and it will grow like crazy but can get a little wild and I also used a corkscrew vine. Very pretty and fragrant when it finally blooms. Clitorea Turnatea (pea vine) would be pretty also. Hyacinth bean grows very quickly and would make good cover too. There are many others, but this is all I've grown in recent years.
Ok, Brugie!
I am onto the Sweet Autumn Clematis & Hyacinth bean and couldn't find sources on the Clitorea Turnatea (pea vine). The passiflora - wow - beautiful! but need to find where to buy and cultural info; at this moment -- whelm'd (as in over).
thanks for your generous help; feel like I am limping along at this point. But . . . tomorrow is another day!
TLC, if you are wanting some Clitorea Turnatea seeds I have some that I can send you. LMK Here is a link with pictures and some info

I've read Akebia vine will grow in sun or shade. A vigorous vine. Unique fruit and flowers. And interesting leaves when it is not blooming. I'm growing it in shade and it's wonderful!
Just now saw your post about the pea seeds. Had I marked this thread to watch, I would have been back and could have sent you some seeds, but mine are mixed, blue and white. I don't have a lot, but would share if you still need some.
Oh, Brugie!
Thanks for the offer; I am just getting ready to sow the ones sent to me; Clitoria Turnatea; If I ruin them, will email you. So far everything I have received is doing good except the Chickabiddy Vine; think it is damping off but nothing else is! You are all so kind!

I have ordered for Spring delivery a Dicentra Scandens 'Athens Yellow'. It is a perennial vine which blooms all summer then dies off in the winter to resprout again in the Spring. It is related to the bleeding heart. I got it here:

I plan to use it to cover a chain link fence surrounding an ugly air conditioning unit.
I have over 700' of iron fence along the city street/sidewalk. I hope to put climbing vines about every 20'-30' to put some color and perfume into the drab concrete of the city. I'll get back to y'all for help on that project as I get settled into my new role as volunteer gardener here in the Bronx
