Help with Rattail

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I think I let my 20 year old rattails freeze. I am a bad plant mommy. I have had these for years. I forgot to bring them in the night it got to 24ºF. I think there may be a few sprigs that I can save. These were under some leaves that had fallen on them. They are still green. Some are a bit mushy, but a few sprigs are still green and firm. Are they worth saving and what do I do?

cut off the mushy part and discard. take the green part, apply some fungicide and allow to callous for a couple of days till thoroughly dry. plant in fresh soil for cactus mix ... http://www.myhouseplants.com/plantdb/aporocactus.html

Thank you so much MaVie. There is a bit of good green left, one whole piece is good. I was so afraid I'd killed these. They are so pretty when they bloom. Last year it was a huge hoya I forgot. Guess that means I've got too many plants!!

I bet you'll save it Calalily. You'll have to give us an update in a few weeks to see if it made it. I get so attached to plants I keep for years and years.
But, I doubt if anyone could have too many plants.

i know exactly what u mean Cala. often times i do miss the rare cactus and succulent collections i once had. one can never have enough plant if planting is one's passion. hope some u tried to save pull through. good luck.

Thanks all, they look pretty good today. Not mushy like I thought they would be. It's cold here, started out 49 this morning, is 39 now and still falling. Tiny snowflakes have been falling today.

Sounds like you might save some of the plant then. That's good. I didn't get some of my coleus in in time this year. I have brought dozens of plants in but missed a couple of pots of those. I always worry I won't be able to find that same kinds next year.

coleus are very easy to propagate. take a slip with a node. plant on damp soil. in 3 weeks time, u got a new plant. i did a lot a while back, and they are all doing good. u can use rooting hormone if u wish. i did not use any rooting hormone. just stick the cuttings on damp [not soggy wet] potting medium.
