HG, it's not bad

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Found out today what is wrong with HG, its not bad, similar to Arlenes report. It has overgrown bark, caused by humidity and warmth. It eventually grows together. It's not in the upper regions which have lots of sprouts and leaves.(and a Y, and someday hopefully a bud)

Here is what the top looks like. It's the same plant that had the mealybug. Thank goodness I only could find one bug on the whole plant.

thanks for posting, cala. it looks really similar to mine doesn't it?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

So is this something that will cause the plant to die if not treated? I don't have it yet, but want to be prepared.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

No, Brugie. it is only cosmetic.... affects appearance only. plants still grow and bloom.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

I love it when you do postings like these! Thanks.

Arlene is right, only cosmetic.

Thanks you guys. Kinda like putting on very thick makeup and it cracks?

Yes, that's it!! Sort of like the skin disease that makes your skin grow too fast and it gets thick and cracks, is it Exema(Help Tracey, how do you spell that word?)

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Glad it's nothing serious.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Exzema, maybe? Tracey, I'm not a good speller. Better check me out and put the right spelling in here.

eczema

Thanks Kell, that's the word I was looking for.

I thought you were in bed already Cala.....I said night night to you awhile back!! Did you sneak back out??

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

cala is this the only one it appeared on? Does HG really
not like your humidity?

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

I was so glad to find out that this is not serious. I have this on a number of my brugs and was really worried and was just about ready to toss them. Thank goodness, I waited to hear from Arlene. It all makes sense to me now . . . we have such high humidity most all the time and then of course, our heat. Don't know what I would do without all of the help that I get from everyone here.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Frannie, you never did say it was this bad. Geez, I'm so glad it won't be a big problem for you. I was thinking in the beginning that these brugs would have to be tossed and that would make me sick. There is no better resource available for information on brugs that this web site and the people who make it work. Where else could we post a question and get an answer within minutes or at least within hours.

Susie, my Butterfly, all of them(4), are cracked and tan colored like bark has been damaged or scraped, then some smooth green. Wondered what horrible disease they might have? Sure don't want to lose them!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Brugie, take a picture for us. We will try to help. Also, if you have a Dept of Ag Extension service in your county, they should be able to send it off at little or no cost to you.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Hibisus my butterfly has funny bark and grew 7-8 feet tall and i love it!!! i don't think it has cracked though.
Susie, i guess they didn't want to send mine off. the master gardener called me today. she has 4 she bought mail order years ago, said 3 of hers had bark just like mine. she spent a couple of hours on the web. only the white one didn't she said.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I never mess with the master gardeners(sorry if I tick some of you guys off, but they've never helped at all here). I go straight to the Ag Dept at the local university.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Susie, you lost me with the taking picture thing. Have you got Hibiscus and me mixed up again? :-)

I see where you thought my brugs had a problem. I was referring to Arlene's and Frannies brugs in my post. However, Hibiscus does have a problem too. I lucked out with this stuff, but have the leaf spot problem here. Hoping I don't lose them from that problem.

Susie, i know now kind of, but i still feel okay about the diagnosis. Floridan brought a plant here, misidentified, and i identified, but a master gardener had told her the wrong name. susie you would probably pass the test without studying.
ms brugie, i think she did mix them up. i posted a pic of my butterfly bark under a pink floyd posting, the ones that show the nematodes.

Brugie . . I am catching up on threads tonight and I wanted to say that I agree with you 100%. There is not a place anywhere like DG's. I just don't know what I would do without all of you and I always know that if I need help of any kind, all I have to do is ask. I think that is quite special!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

So Cala, what do you just walk in to the Dept of Ag Extension service with a smaple of your problem??
thanks

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Smaple? Cool Kell. Did you have a great date night tonight? That is how I was talking last night. :-)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Well Brugie, I confess.....I had a sake or 2!!! LOL. SAMPLE!!! We had a great time as we always do!

So was the party at Dee's tonight?? Or were you good after drinking to excess at Cala's last night??

God, I hate how when you click SEND.........and as it is leaving your sight you see a big typo............ TOO LATE!!!

Kell, try clicking preview 1st, so u can edit before u click send. that is what i do sometimes, specially if the message is a bit long. hth

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Kell, that's what I do, I just take a sample in. If it's a big plant that has a problem, sometimes I can get one to come out to the gh, but not always.
