Stopped at a garden center today on the way home and got to talking to the owner about selling her some of my tropical water lilies. To make a long story short, I bought a bag of dirt and she gave me the last 2 Plumeria plants she had.
They are about 20 inches tall and are going dormant.
My question is, how do I take care of them so they will grow this spring? I am guessing that I treat them like gingers......(in the GH, no water), but want to make sure.
I have never had a plumeria before.....hope this doesn't turn into a new obsession!!!!!
HELP! What do I do with these?
it is indeed a new obsession TL :)! i wrapped mine bareroot in newspaper. will plant again on the ground, when weather gets warmer. check this url for more info ... http://www.plumeria101.com/
Thanks MVR, lots of good info at this site!
Gotta go back and check it out more :-).
TL
yeah TL. do ur homework and u'll be surprise how easy they grow. then the craving for more will hit u soon LOL!
Toadlily- I have some plumerias. I'm outside of Austin. What are your night time Temps?
DR- I am 30 minutes south of DFW. Our nights get just a bit colder than your.....the coldest we get is the low 20's, with the possible high teens if the winter is a bad one. But even at that, it is only for a few hours. Always warms up during the day. Do you have yours in the ground all year?
I have been hunting the web and reading up on these.
MVR- I think you are right....DH is going to put me in the looney bin, but I just might end up with a new.....obsession
They don't like to go past 50 degress. I have mine in pots. I put some in the ground in the pots. You really need to bring them inside. They almost go dormant here in your house like a ginger--except the tuber it the stick. Unless you have a GH or a verrryyyy sunny area. If they start droping leaves don't worry --it's normal in the winter. DO NOT OVER WATER. I would let them get bone dry in the winter. Did you get named variteies or ones that just say "yellow" or "Mexican"
don't worry TL... one too many of us here in DG forum, am sure if we trade with one another, sooner or later we will all a collection of different varieties. :)!!!
I have them in the gh now. They aren't labeled with names, just colors....one white, one red. I guess I will have to wait until they bloom and then try to id them, with the help from my friends at DG :-)
They are going dormant now, hardly any leaves, I guess that makes it easy and gives me more time to find out about them before they start really growing.
yes, you have more time yippee! The main thing is water, and let them dry out some, full sun, And the highest middle number fertilizer you can find. 50 or higher is good. You have juice those things like there body builders.
i only have a white one :(, and has not bloomed yet. but if the bloom is different than what u have, i will be more than willing to send u a cutting.
yeah, keep them on the dry side during the wintery months as the root system is prone to root rot. the url above should have all the info we both need for the time being.
That site is full of good reading. If my white is different than your white than we can definately swap cuttings and you may end up with a red one too :-).
LOL, just got to thinking, we are talking about swaping and neither of ours have enev bloomed so we really don't know what we truely have, LOL.
TL, in the Phils. each color of plumeria has different varieties... similar to brugs, same color but different species. different form and fragrance too.
very lovely DR :)! thanks for sharing ur lovely plant.
DR!!!
That is just beautiful! I only hope that I can keep mine alive long enough to see a bloom.
just don't over water.
winter care for plumeria ... http://www.theplumeriasociety.org/pcb/pcb_1-3.html
MVR- that site says that the limbs are going to shrivel up! Should I take cuttings and try to root them in the house under lights? If so, how much of the "trunk" do I leave on the plant it's self?
it would be wise to take cuttings. this time last year, i got the cuttings. started it similar to starting brugs. here check this site as it suggest different type of action to take ... http://www.theplumeriasociety.org/pcb/pcb_main.html just click on the orange subject and will take u to url u wish to learn. no special light needed. i started my cuttings indoor by a southwestern window exposure. good luck!
last year i just brought them in the Gh with everything else
they grew nice this year but never did flower in the spring i will put them in bigger pots
They are already going dormant, just 4 tiny leaves left on each branch. If I take cuttings will they root when they are taken from a plant that is almost dormant?
Desert Rose great pic..I use to have 100 different kinds in pots..but got tired of all of them and gave them away.I have about 5 kinds now.....I have one called Mango blush that is similar to Gloria Schmidt.A hybrid someone in Houston did.
Mango blush--It sounds like I might want to eat it...grin
Was the person in Houston Milton Pierson? If you want to trade later let me know. I get mine from a friend--I'm working on his website for him. I get paid in Plumeria Bucks--Ha!
WOW!! I love your picture DR!!
DR, That's the one I want!! Drool!!!!
